Fuel level sensor for GM P30 454 Chassis

How do I get to the sensor? Mine doesn't respond according to tank level.

I checked it to make sure wiring is OK by using a dummy resistor and the guage does respond.

Does the tank have to be dropped or is there an access to the sensor from the floor like we have on cars?

There is carpeted floor above the tank.

I'm thinking, there must be an access during mfg but I'm not sure.

Any ideas? If this question has been raised before can you fill me in to it?

Thanks
  • I have often seen fuel level sender not report because of a bad ground. If the tank is metal, try adding a temporary ground.

  • Has 86 bounder. Fuel tank is above his water tank. Non-basement model
  • MY Southwind requires dropping the tank.
Yours I do not know because you did not specify what you have as an Rv in your signature
  • Sounds like you maybe able to get to it through the floor.
Your rig does not appear to have in tank fuel pump. The fuel gauge sensor is stand alone.
  • The fuel tank sits above the fresh water tank. I ran a temp (ground wire) while watching the guage at the dash panel.

There is nothing between the plywood floor and the steel tank. The fresh water tank is fiber glass.

I used a trim pot (variable resistor) to simulate the built in varying resistance of the sensor assembly.
The dash indicator does respond accordingly.

    It's a Fleetwood Bounder '86 Model.
  • Many p-30 MHs are a basement model which on my rig has the fresh water tank in area between fuel tank and interior floor. I would need to drop tank.
Did you place the dummy resistor close to the tank?
The gauge is mounted to the fuel pump assembly on electric fuel pump rigs.
Make, year and model of rig would help posters.
