Generator fuel pump?

Onan 4000 quite in a 2003 Itasca Sunova 30B:

I'm thinking that I have a bad fuel pump. I do have 3/4 of a tank. The generator starts and dies. Sometimes it runs for a minute or two only after I prime it using the primer switch but it clicks when running just like it does when I prime it, then it surges and dies. When pushing the primer button, it clicks for a long time before it primes the carb. I'm thinking new fuel pump and filter. Sound correct???
  • Oil can be full, and still have bad pressure switch.
If yours is equipped with an oil filter, the pressure switch is just above it. For testing, disconnect the wire and see what happens.
  • I suggest changing the fuel filter first before messing around with a possibly unneeded pump swap.

    What is full model number?

I'll have to look to find the number but the oil is full.

Have you checked to insure the rubber lines are not bad sucking air?
Test system by disconnecting fuel line from output of fuel pump and applying 12 volts DC to operate pump.

Thought I'd just replace the filter when I did the pump.

All the lines look good. There's no fuel leaking anywhere.

I didn't apply 12 volts. The pump pumps when I hold the primer button down.
  • When my fuel pump died, the generator just stopped running. I could turn the genny over and it would start if I squirted some gas in the carb and once the gas was used up it would die. I change fuel filters yearly. I ordered one online and installed it and the genny ran great. Now I keep a spare in my genny stuff drawer.

  • Lots threads on how to buy inexpensive low pressure fuel pump for Onan's - worth a look.
