No question now about Hurricane Irma. If you have an RV, please don't make the mistake of being a hero-pack up and get the heck out of the storm at any cost. Just to inform readers that severe damage to RV's will hurt us all through higher insurance rates spread over policy holders. If you delay, you will regret sitting in traffic when you could be comfortable away in some safe place. If you stay, very good chance your RV and maybe you home will be shredded. I know from reading these RV forums, that this has been said before. Please be Smart and safe.

We're in central FL and are also staying. Have been through numerous hurricanes before. I agree that if we were coastal SE, we'd be leaving. We live in a retirement community with RV homes and a covered RV storage lot. From what I can tell, most are also staying.

I don't live there and have never been through anything at all like a hurricane. When it hits the coast the winds Could Be, and I say again, Could Be 140 mph. Even in central Florida I think that I would leave the RV park and find some place stronger.

The good news is that it is a fast moving storm so the rain will not be as bad as Harvey. Still the wind is going to blow hard for a day. That's a long time to hunker down in an RV.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply we're in our RV. We're in our s&b. Our MH is here in a storage facility within our community. If I were in an RV, you can be sure I'd be outta here!!

Hermine was a piece of crapola west coast tropical storm. Caused a tremendous amount of damage over there. Mathew was a fairly impressive Cat1 storm that affected areas of the NE and central east coasts most heavily. Point is that I wouldnt have based my decisions to stay in Merrit Island based on those 2 storms. As I've said in other threads on here, I'm staying put. But if I lived in Merrit Island, I would already be gone.

Have some friends that live on Merritt Island, they have only lived in Florida for about 5 years now, so have only been through a couple, Mathew and Hermine last year.

They have decided to stay (us shaking our heads in disbelief)
But he has talked with some neighbors that have been through other hurricanes there and they are staying as well.

I did tell her that sometimes they close the southbound lanes and let everyone exit in all the lanes. If it continues to be clogged, that might be what they'll have to do.

Quite frankly, I don't understand why they don't wait another 4 days or so and then come home. After all, they're retired. What's a few more days, and I'm sure money isn't the issue.

I actually have some friends who are on their way home and plan to be here tomorrow (Friday). They spend 3 1/2 months in PA during the summer and are sticking to their plan to come home this week. We're from the St. Pete area but are out west right now. We're northerner transplants and none of us have ever gone through a hurricane.

Our 3 kids are all in the Tampa/St. Pete area and hunkering down because their jobs don't allow them the ability to go now. I wish the gov'n would just order evac. It's much easier to tell the boss "gotta go" when the gov'n says "you gotta go".

I've got a generator at my house and have instructed them how to get it running to get basic needs of power and hot water if needed. They're all stocked up on water and food supplies, etc. We have told them that if needed we could be back in a couple of days to assist with anything.

My hope now (and sorry to say this to anyone living on the east coast of Florida) is that the storm pushes east of the state a bit to lessen the impact on the gulf side of things. The storm being around 400 miles wide is still going to affect the entire state that is only 150.

Just watched about Irma. It is the strongest Hurricane ever recorded and the models have it heading right at Florida. The models have it downgrading to Cat 4 before it hits, but will still surpass Andrew in strength and could wipe out the keys with the storm surge. The Keys are only 3-5 feet above sea level.

I have cousins in Lakeland, and they are sticking around because of work. Sorry, but if it were me, screw the job, my family is more important. CYA

Howdy!

We left Port Charlotte area yesterday afternoon. Stayed in Wildwood over night. We were up and "Oscar Mike" by 0800 this morning. We are now in Summerdale, AL at the Escapees Rainbow Plantation RV park we had no traffic problems other than a traffic accident yesterday just south of Tampa. Other than that we traveled at posted speeds. Praying for those in the path of Irma.
