If I want to celebrate New Years with any kind of real enthusiasm I tend to put myself in interesting places to do it. In 1983/4 I stood on a trash can at the Arc d' Triumph on the Champs Elysee as the year turned. After it was over we waded almost ankle deep in Champagne bottle as we strolled down the Champs toward the Place d' La Concorde. The crowd was enormous, friendly and great to be with.
In the 90's I spent one New Years in Florence a truly magical place with far fewer tourists than normal but still busy. Great food a magical city and at midnight people gathered in the Piazza Della Signoria at the Palazzo Vecchio where at midnight the huge crowd arranged around the edges of the Piazza all tossed their Champagne bottles into the center of the square.
Here in the US I do pretty much what the OP does keep it low key and go to bed at my normal time. Although last night I did share a bottle of Champagne with my good friend.
