Help wanted

Hi all. Have never owned a trailer but we're looking at purchasing a 2001 5th wheel Shadow Cruiser 29 feet in length. We're currently driving a 2010 Dodge Hemi with a crew cab. Haven't actually seen this trailer yet and I'm trying to find out if (pardon my ignorance but I don't know all the jargon yet) the overhang part, that goes above the truck bed, might be too long for a short bed truck, if this makes sense. The truck bed is 5'7". The model of the trailer is F- 2908-RK. Does anyone know if this will fit? I can't seem to find anything online to tell me. It's been suggested we might want to purchase a Drawtite automatic hitch. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
  • 2010 Ram Crew cab 5'7" bead means half ton with likely under 1400 pounds of payload. That isn't enough to carry two people, a 200 pound receiver in the bed, and pin weight of any 29' 5er. Confirm by looking a the tire and loading sticker for as equipped payload. If you want a late model Ram to tow a 5er, get a 3/4 ton gasser or better 1-ton.
  • It's all about sizing the tool for the job and that means ratings

    'Hemi' means nothing without the TV's GVWR

    Is it a +6K GVWR Truck, or +7K GVWR, or +8K GVWR or +9K GVWR or bigger?

    Ditto the sizing of the trailer and make no matter fiver or tongued
  • IF your truck is capable of carrying the weight of the trailer and the hitch, there are a couple of ways you can go;
    you can get an extended pinbox on the trailer
    You can get a slider hitch for the truck
    or
    you can do both.
    If your truck is a Ram 1500 with P tires, I would say you need a bigger truck and better tires. If you have LT tires in load range D, you might be barely adequate from a weight carrying/towing standpoint.
    Personally, I would want a 3/4 ton truck (Ram 2500) with LT load range E tires for that trailer, and my personal choice would be one with the Cummins diesel engine. A gas engine, whether hemi or 5.9 Magnum, would do the job, but the diesel would do it better.
    I would also want an 8 foot bed for towing a fifth wheel. But, that is mostly because of the amount of tools and "stuff" I could put in the bed. I could never get all I want in a 5 foot 7 inch box!
  • Welcome to the forum. You have posted in a section for Good Sam Club issues, I have asked the moderator to move the post.

    In the meanwhile, giving more info will get better answers. A "2010 Dodge Hemi" is not a model of truck, it is the engine. We will need to know the model and how it is equipped.

    In brief, there are solutions for towing a 5er with a short bed. I'm sure some here will give suggestions.

    Or the Reese Revolution. Though I havent used one personally, I do know someone with one and they say it works well.
