I don't think it's so much that "high pressure" works but the good salesmen know what arguments may appeal to an individual. Many of the typical ones don't work on me but having a good knowledge of the vehicle and pointing out the performance strong points might. When I sold to a dealer, his strong argument was "but I can write you a check right now". The biggest "trick" that not even many smart people get is that they will offer you an inflated amount for your trade-in but subtract it from the total asking price for what you are buying not from the actual price you could get with no trade-in.
