Hitch question

Is there a way to determine what a hitch and weight dist. bars can handle to tow a trailer and hitch weight? I have looked for markings but have not found any. The hitch is very robust looking and I currently tow a 3500 lb trailer and if I wanted to up grade to a 6000 lb unit would I need to upgrade the hitch and WD system?

thanks
  • If that was the hitch that came from factory with 2" opening then it most likely is a heavy enough receiver frame to take the new trailer. You just might have to get heavier bars and depending on the trailer it may have a different size ball (2 5/16).I think the bars are rated 500,750, and 1000. Good Luck and Happy Camping
  • Are there any model numbers at all on your hitch or the weight distribution bars? You can call a place like this one.

ETrailer.com with any numbers, and they can tell you what you have, and what might be required for say a 750 pound hitch weight on the larger unit.

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • What hitch do you have...manufacturer?
And yes, there are different bar ratings that need to be considered and matched depending on the GVWR of what you are towing.
