.... Currently at New Melones Resevoir ( Tuolumne County, CA ) and about 1/2 of the weekday campers are either at the lower end of the economic scale or not even on it. Ancient RV, no tent but living out of vehicle, pit bulls, unkempt & disheveled appearance, noise complaints, etc.... So far this has yet to affect us, but, it may in the future...

Don't know how they calculate those numbers
Maybe take CEO salaries and Government salaries and avg that out ???

It's BS to quote "median" rather than average.
The avg last year was $48,000 (or $23/hr). That's a heck of a lot less than $63K.
That would be the average wage for an indivdual, not a household. So a household with both spouses working and making that average US wage would make $96,000 a year, far over the US median household income.
according to the US Census Bureau

โ€œIncome in the Past 12 Months - Income of Households: This includes the income of the householder and all other individuals 15 years old and over in the household, whether they are related to the householder or not.โ€
https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/fact/note/US/INC110218

Median household income in 2018 was $63,179; that is for everyone in the household

Median individual income for 2019 has been reported at $40,100.

Who ever said our parents had more with less hours is looking back with rose colored glasses. It was a struggle for them just as it is a struggle today.

Very true. We had 1 car, a reel lawnmower, the snowblower were us kids with shovels and whatever tv you watched came from an antenna, and we had 1 tv.

Today-> multiple vehicles, cable, internet, cell phone plans, rv, multiple tv's, tablets, lawnmower, lawn service, travelling kids sports and on and on.

Who ever said our parents had more with less hours is looking back with rose colored glasses. It was a struggle for them just as it is a struggle today. Our expectations have changed. We want more material things today then our parents, that comes with a price. How much of your life are you willing to trade for those items.

Today we expect both young parents to hold down two full time jobs to achieve the same. What has changed that prevents many young couples from achieving the same lifestyle without working a combined 160hrs/week? It's too easy for us to blame them, but is their lifestyle and unrealistic expectations the root cause? What changed?

None of my friends work 160 hrs a week - 80-yes. I don't think that 'achieving the same lifestyle' that your parents had is the same as it is in todays world.

That would make you a qualified applicant for employment at the DMV.

There is a homeless guy who is a host at Trillium Campground in Mt Hood. Host campsite is a Tent and lots of blue tarp. Looks like a homeless shelter. Very bad publicity for the campground. Top that and he doesnโ€™t take good care of the sites or outhouse.
My new DRW and camper on the truck the first time.

This sounds good. But when somebody hired me or I hired somebody, the work schedule was set by employer.
2 "equally qualified candidates" One tells me he has his kids every other weekend. Fine. But if I need that truck to run on the weekend it better run.

As a firefighter/EMT, I frequently went to homeless camps and shelters.
From what I saw, the overwhelming majority of homeless are the mentally ill and substance abusers.

The best perspective I've ever seen is a documentary called "Seattle is Dying". It's a hard look at the problem of those who prefer to be homeless; and I think they quote something in the 90% range of all homeless have mental health issues and addictions. It's an hour-long video; and often painful to watch; but does offer solutions towards the end

July 6, 2018; Washington Post

Last month, writing for Business Insider, Leanna Garfield noted that, โ€œHundreds of malls and thousands of mall-based stores have shuttered in the past two decades, and many more may close within the next 10 years.โ€

Meanwhile, homelessness, which had been declining as the Great Recession faded, has started to rise again. The federal government in 2017 reported that there were 554,000 homeless nationwide, including nearly 58,000 families with children.

In Arlington, Virginia, a nonprofit asked if a recently shuttered mall might provide shelter for those who needed it.

As Terrence McCoy writes in the Washington Post, the transformation of Alexandriaโ€™s Landmark Mall into a homeless shelter is representative of โ€œa new way of thinking that is bringing together three economic phenomena: the collapse of the brick-and-mortar retail industry, the disappearance of affordable housing in Americaโ€™s boom towns, and the struggle to reduce homelessness.โ€

------------------

Cities need to re-purpose our shuttered Malls into affordable housing, on bus lines, and create jobs.

Many of these eye sores are all across America.

Large parking lots that could be sectioned off for RV's to get homeless off the streets and a place to park for those down on their luck.

To live there they must participate in programs to search for work or job training and perhaps mandatory 4 hours a week to clean up the grounds. One parent can work days and one parent can work nights, get to work!

Strip malls have smaller stores that can be used for laundry, daycare, internet access, a food bank pantry, etc.

The City can start a GoFundMe. People will donate.

FEMA trailers are set up during disasters with pipes for water and sewage. It can be done.

Social services and job services offices must be on the property. Get the Church involved.

Politicians are really good and throwing billions of dollars at problems with zero results.

Do a pilot program in one City to measure the success.
