How far to tow without brake?

with or without brakes just ensure that you have good safety cables/chains installed. That is usually the 1st thing cops look for then they will move on. Make sure you hook them up right and then you should not have to worry about failures like so many here think are going to happen.

I had an SMI Stay-n-Play for years that quit working. I always seemed kind of rediculous trying to stop a 30,000# rig with a 3,000# one. Always hooked it up though just in case I was involved in an accident I could say I had one. Now I have an AirForceOne and it make a big difference in stop and go traffic. Not much going downhill as I try and stay off the brakes as much as possible. If your rig is rated at 10,000# towing you should be fine but still hook it up just in case.

Many states have not addressed the issue of auxiliary braking for towed motor vehicles. Some have information under emergency vehicles which are wreckers. Braking information is for trailers.
Just for information, I do have auxiliary braking for my toad as my MH and toad are near the higher end of GCVW.
Don't go by the charts furnished by companies that produce auxiliary braking devices as they are trying to sell their product.

The distance to your next auto accident. Anything less than that is not a problem.

In many states the only LAW that applies is a Braking Performance Law.
Generally, you must be able to stop your "combination of vehicles" within 40 or 45 feet (depending on the state you are in) from 20 MPH on a level, clean, dry, hard surface.
Many people have towed many different types of vehicles many thousands of miles without any kind of braking system, with no problems. Nothing bent, nothing broke, nobody was injured or died.
A few people have had problems with their towed vehicle breaking away from the towing unit. State legislatures don't seem to think such incidents are problematic; they haven't passed any laws regarding them. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards don't directly address the issue, either.
So, yes, most assuredly, "Do you feel lucky?"

There are 2 concerns here. One is the additional load on the MH brakes. Probably not a concern unless you are doing a lot of downhill towing, or driving in stop and go traffic and using the brakes a lot.

The other concern is the breakaway brakes. That's not a distance thing. The coupling between the MH and the toad can fail any time. Then the toad keeps going until it hits something if you have no breakaway brakes.

I know nothing about the legal aspect.

I flat towed my 04 Jeep with 2 motorhomes now and never brakes on the Jeep, no problem with braking on motorhome, now I carry the Jeep on a trailer that has brakes but I can still flat tow if I need to and still no brakes on my Jeep and it does just fine..

Did a trip to Austin TX and back to Vegas, no tow brakes on the Jeep..

How far can you tow without brakes on he toad? Well.... if going UP hill, probably 5 million miles! If going DONW hill, probably 5 miles or until the tow vehicle brakes over heat!
