I do not use Calgon, just add a squirt of Ivory and 1/3 tank of water on the trip home. Has worked for me for years.
When we winterize I do a high water pressure tank rinse with water down the toilet tube and into the tank with a wand. Have you seen some of what sticks to the side of the toilet down tube? ;D
Calgon just makes the soap, soapier. Lets it hold particles in suspension better, like soft water does. It helps the soap clean but does not clean itself, it prevents hard water deposits through chemical action on the magnesium and calcium found in hard water.
Unless you are constantly filling your tanks with hard water you do not need Calgon.
