Calgon liquid or powder?

Does it make a difference if Calgon powder or liquid is used in the black water tank? How much of each? Thanks!

  • I use calgon and Rid-x packets (looks like the packets that is used n dish washers). I have not had any problems with that combination yet.

It's mixed with water in the black tank, why would it matter if liquid or powder?
I don't even mix mine just dump it down the toilet with detergent and a bucket of water and let the motion on the road mix it for me.
I find its much more convient to pre measure a cup of each an store in baggies. No fussing on the road and worse case of a spill just sweep it up.

Here's a bit more information about Calgon and 20 Mule Team Borax:

Super Washing Soda, White King & 20 Mule Team Borax: Precipitating water conditioners, they bind the minerals in the wash water but minterals can redeposit if not rinsed out really well. Can cause minerals to build up on fabric and the inside of your washer. They can also be irritating to skin if not rinsed very well.

Calgon: Calgon is a non-precipitating water conditioner and binds the minerals into a solution that does not redeposit on clothing or the inside of the washer. It must be added to both the wash water and the rinse water for highest effectiveness. It is more gentle to clothing and skin. It is also more expensive to use.

I pre-mixed White King powder in water bottles, when liquid Calgon was not available, to add to my holding tanks. The powder solidified into solid crystals that completely filled the bottles and could not be removed. I did not want that mixture in my holding tanks.
  • I use liquid Calgon and liquid tide. I use the bleach if I need a little something more. I used to use the chemical packets but they just weren't cutting it so we switched to the geo method. Do not use bleach in your tank if you might still have a chemical packet in there. It is not pretty if you do. Don't ask me how I know this.
  • I've started buying Rain Drops brand water softener from Amazon. It is only $10 for two 42 oz. boxes of powder with Prime. Also, I buy the cheapest laundry detergent I can find at our grocery store or at Target. I haven't used any bleach yet.
  • I use Calgon liquid and Dawn, no bleach. Without getting into chemistry, the surfactant properties of the detergent and Calgon theoretically prevents stuff from sticking to the tank walls and bottom.
  • The Calgon softens the water and helps dissolve the gunk. I swear by the geo method since we started using it. The detergent keeps stuff from sticking.
  • whats the theory behind all of this? Over the past 18 months I've just been putting the little blue chemical packet in my black tank, maybe every 2nd or 3rd dump, or whenever I notice an odor.
