Inverter generators with exhaust extensions - feedback?

OK - Have a champion 3100 inverter generator that I run while in the bed of my pickup. I have a roll top cover which I open most of the way while running the gen. I am concerned about rain situations where I will need to cover the generator while running. I am thinking about buying an exhaust extension flange and 10" of flexiable exhaust hose ( avaliable on ebay ) so that I can route the exhaust more effectively when the cover is closed partially. I have heard that it will cause too much back pressure but 10" hose doesn't seem like much? I realize that the hose will get hot and could be a safety issue. Any feedback would be appreciated. The good thing is it's just two bolts so you can easily remove it when not needed.

I do something similar with my 2KW Honda generator...

It sits secured in the tail gate corner of my covered and locked truck bed cover. I have the FOLD-A-COVER hard plastic folding panels on my truck bed...

Normally I just pull it out onto the tail gate to run my off-road trailer shore power connection.

When it is raining or bad weather I just leave it under the folding panel covers with the tailgate dropped... Never had any issues...

My truck is not usually this full when I am running my generator - we had just arrived at the camp site when this photo was taken...

  • Venting out hot exhaust gas isn't your only issue as you must ensure the intake of fresh cool air that is directed at the genset. Don't do this and your Champ is sure to overheat and shut down. Opening the roll top cover is one solution but then what's the point in using an exhaust extension? Just leave the roll top in place, open the tailgate, and fan force cool air across the genset. Generator Line does offer genset exhaust extensions but AFAIK not for Champion gensets.
