Yes, I realize there are more critical issues at hand resulting from the potential government shutdown than my upcoming trip to Cataloochee to view the elk...HOWEVER, I did spent a good bit of time 6 months ago on the Reserve America website securing my "perfect" site AND, have been preparing for this adventure for several weeks. Since we are leaving the RV at home and electing to tent camp for this adventure due to the steep and winding entrance road to the campground (at the advise of several here on this site), I have also invested a ton of time and a good bit of money getting our tent camping gear in shape. Also, at the direction of many experienced tent campers, I have frozen block ice, prepared easy to re-heat frozen meals as well as a ton of general preparation now only to find out that our trip may in fact be cancelled due to this shutdown which by the way will cost our National Parks millions in revenue. And finally, when will we know if there is a shutdown? Well, we are scheduled to leave on Oct 1. Yes, I am annoyed! Oh well, thanks for letting me vent. There will always be another trip at another time if things don't come together for this trip.

I hear your whine...
Last time around we were going to spend all of early Oct seeing the National Parks and Monuments in southern Utah and northern Arizona.
We got to Moab Sept 29th and spent the 30th seeing the "high points" of both Arches and Canyonlands.
Then we started seeing State and Tribal Parks.

We finally gave up and started home on the 12th, getting there on the 15th.... Of course it all re-opened in the 16th

We went back this past spring to see the things we didn't get a chance two years ago.

I don't think it's going to happen again this year, but even if it does, you have the opportunity to return.

Why not just engage plan "B" and go camping some where else while you still have some time left to make such a change? Plans change, things happen.

As long as the American People keep electing and then re-electing the career politicians, This is the kind of government we are going to get. Quit sending the same slackers back. Keep changing them out like you do your socks and maybe they'll wake up and represent the people of America instead of themselves.

The biggest problem with this country is priorities. Like a family that makes enough to more than enough to support themselves then gives all the money away to other people (i.e. countries) and starves to death. If we stopped foreign aid taxes could be cut and there would be no budget problems.

Considering we borrow a significant amount of every dollar we spend from the Chinese, perhaps it is time for a government shutdown to focus the mind. Sorry it might ruin a camping trip. It's like blowing all your take home pay on Vegas vacations and putting the childcare and groceries on the Visa. Eventually, you're over your limit, and when Visa demands a payment, we are complaining about having to cut back on our frivolous boondoggles. Fellow Americans, government spending is out of control (every household in America owes $110,000). It's time to pull out the heroin needle of unbridled government spending. Sorry to say it but Government shutdown = cold turkey withdrawal. Begin flames in 3...2..1

One thing that does seem to get them excited is LOTS of negative e-mail. A couple of organizations I belong to have found out that a flood of e-mail on a particular subject DOES seem to have an effect. I'm talking about e-mail to any and all congress members that you can get an e-mail address for. But it takes a lot of organization to get enough people to do it. I have addresses for a good number, and send a lot of email. If nothing else except for the pest affect. Most never gets to the person, just handled by staff on a routine basis, but it gives them something to make them feel important, and keeps them out of trouble. Beware the old Far-- with too much time and a computer!

Not really whining, more like just laughing at the stupidity exhibited every day by the clowns that call themselves government. And especially those running for office that think they can do anything about it. Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things!

Personally, I am with you 100%. This is about the most asinine excuse for government I have seen. It is one thing to threaten, cajole and eventually shut down the government over a significant issue. I don't like it, but at least during the last shutdown it was over concerns about the entire budget. Now the idiots have taken to threatening to shut down large segments of the economy over funding Planned Parenthood.
No matter what side you are on, that should be an up or down vote on THAT issue, not some cockamamie amendment to a continuing resolution to fund our entire government. The congress needs to grow a set of you know whats and vote on the issues directly. Parliamentary Procedure was developed and followed to prevent exactly what is happening today. Unrelated amendments to bills were to be restricted by rule. Now we fund dung beetle research on votes to extend benefits to Military Veterans. CYA is out of control and unfortunately for those who say "take it out at the ballot box" we are left with choices that make us sing those lines from the Who: "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, we all got fooled again!"

There is not a high likelihood of a shutdown this time around, IMHO.

It may be a different story come December though.

First and most important. Don't worry about things you have no control. Second and quite important remember everything when you vote. Fortunately in this country we have a very important duty as citizens and that is to vote.

I would look on the bright side. If you're in a Tent, they have a Bear Alert because of increased activity. If NP is shut down for part of your trip, you don't have to worry about Bears tearing up your Tents.
