last trip of the season

We just got home from the last trip of the season for us. we were at Johnsons Shut in state park in MO. The weather was cool but clear the stars were out in full force at night and it was wonderful to listen to the owls talk back and forth in the timber. Later the coyotes would call to each other. It made the time spent by the campfire so much better, and the fall colors have really taken off. We spent time in the Arcadia valley over to St Geneivive and enjoy the whole area. The campground was our first time but certainly not the last what a nice place.
  • Our last trip for 2013 will be over the Christmas holiday which will then turn in to the first camping for 2014 for the New Year. We'll be heading to Destin, FL for the holidays. Recently returned from a visit to Southern Indiana and then across Kentucky before returning home to NE GA. The Autumn leaves were spectacular!
  • The Shut-ins is a great area. Have you been to Elephant Rock State Park? It is about 30 minutes away.
  • We just had our last weekend camping at Abol Bridge campground just twenty miles west of Millinocket, Maine. The foliage was beautiful. Deer and moose were seen browsing the river bank alongside our camp site. A pair of bald eagles was fishing along the river. The view of Mt. Katahdin was spectacular out our front window. We hiked into the ice caves, relaxed in front of the camp fire, watched the clear skies and stars at night, certainly enjoyed the complete silence at night, and always had the mountain towering over us. It was an amazing way to end the camping season. Sad on one hand because the end was here, but enticing on the other hand because we were making future plans to return next year.

Yup, that's what winter is for! We take our last trip this weekend. Kinda hard for us--we usually get in at least one trip per month. But I'll be having lots of company for Thanksgiving (gotta get prepared for that, saving up my time off for that week) and I'm having some surgery in December which will set me back for at least a month. Hoping we can get back out there by the end of February.
  • Glad you had a good season finale. Sounds like a great trip.
