Lube Shank Question?

Hi Team,

Understand it is a good idea to lube the ball. Is it also a good idea to lube the shank (the part that goes into the receiver)?

Thanks
Dan
  • It might make installing it easier, or more difficult if there is a build up of dirt and sand between the two moving parts. I have never lubed mine, and it shows some rust stains because the grease would have prevented the rust from forming.

    Have fun camping!
  • Really only the moving parts that are susceptible to wear need to be greased..niether appplies to the shank.
  • I asked because on the hensley I previously hensley suggested using silicone dry lube on the part that went into the truck's receiver.

I did it once when everything was new. A little WD-40 in the receiver. After a short while, everything sort of wore in and there has never been a need to since.

I don't recall any recommendation to lubricate the shank where it enters the truck receiver. They DO recommend lubing the shank where it enters the hitch head however. This is because the wedge shape that enters the head can sometimes get stuck if not lubed now and then. I just shoot mine with WD40 everytime I hitch up.

  • I initially greased the shank of my WDH as a rust inhibitor year ago, but got tired of cleaning up the mess when the stinger was pulled out. I don't see any other benefit and no longer lubricate it.
