Medical alert devices

I'm looking into obtaining a medical alert device.I searched several companies online, including Lifealert. I'm pretty much settled on the GreatCall Splash device.Anyone out there using this service? Any other comments welcome.

No, a landline isn't necessary. For those of us that travel, it would be an inconvenience. Most of the units I investigated can be set up to work on a wireless carrier, such as Verizon, etc.

I got yhe Great Call Splash for my Mom about a year ago - it works great and she is very happy with it.......

I also got the "caregiver monitoring" portion (I think it is an app now) - where I can monitor where she is and it alerts me if she goes out comes home, etc.......

She is an active 87 year old - so it is peace of mind for me living 5 1/2 hours away!!!

It is very reasonable price wise also.

Oh one drawback - it should be charged nitely - so Mom does take it off and if she needs to use the bathroom during the night she is "without" protection (not on her).

Also it is a little larger than another that I looked at - but she is comfortable with the size and weight (not much) of the unit and adjusted to wearing it without a problem!

Yes, I'm aware of the need for charging. The company says charging every 3 or 4 days is recommended (IIRC). I'll try to work that in by charging at times when I have someone with me, or I'm sure I'll be in a position that I won't need it for an emergency. Somehow I'll work around it because I do like the unit. I do appreciate your reminders, though.

  • Thanks for your input. I like the Splash unit because everything is contained in the pendant, such as microphone/speaker. with the other companies, you need to speak and listen to a remote device, which is unacceptable to me.

  • FWIW, I contracted with Life Station for my mother. It worked well and their customer service was good.
Unfortunately she only needed it one month before I cancelled it (moved her to group family home). Upon cancelling, there wasn't any BS or hidden charges and the matter was closed without drama.
