Mexican caravan with disabilties

I am wagon master on a small Mexican Caravan this Fall. We have never had anyone with disabilities before. This time we have 3. My sister who is co-wagon master has MS. One other customer needs a hip replacement and the 3rd one is in a wheelchair after a stroke. It has been quite an eye opener. Mexico is not exactly disability friendly. Fortunateley the lady in the wheelchair on'y weighs about 100 lbs. We had to lift her 4 ft to get her onto the Copper Canyonb train for eg. If it was a a 300 lb individual it would be impossible. As it is she has managed on about 90% of our tours. Now at least know where to draw the line.

  • Tequila - May I ask which tour group are you with, one that we have inquired about has dropped their Mexican tour, and we would sure like to try one next winter.
  • I just returned from Puerto Vallarta and we took a trip a few months ago to Cabo San Lucas. Neither with the rig, but Mexico is definitely disability friendly and the ADA rules apply when they can. Even in some of the smaller towns we visited ramps were available for our disability scooter...not many ramps but enough. Roads are rough, rocky, and sometimes unpaved, making travel with a wheelchair or scooter challenging, but not impossible. People were extremely friendly, and helpful. Coming to a corning where my wife would have to get out of the scooter so I could lift the thing to the next level shop owners or others would always offer to assist. There are may second story shops and restaurants that do not have access other than steps. But all in all, we had a wonderful trip/vacation. Personally, I am still afraid to take the MH down south, wish I were not, as we used to go that way often, and we had a fantastic trip with TRACKS years ago over the mountain on the train. But that is another story and my paranoia. But as for your trip, I would have little or no concern. Travel Safe, and Happy Trails.
  • You are just confirming my belief that Mexico is a great place to visit. We go every year and have always found the same compassion and helpfulness that you have experienced.
  • Thanks again. Maybe there is hope for the human race. :)
  • Oddly enough, or maybe not oddly, everyone else on this trip is bending over backwards to ensure this lady has the time of her life. It coudl well be her last trip. She has had a few seizures en route. Considering they are paying customers, they could just have easily taken the attitude that she is holding them up. A bunch of very good folks, restores your faith in humanity. Every time there is an issue, local Mexicans rush over to lift her chair or do what is needed. You don't see that in Canada or the States much anymore.
  • Thank you for being compassionate to those less fortunate. You're a good person.
