My TT was wrecked by a hail storm.

Gee golly darn....

In June we had a big nasty hail storm run through Calgary, destroying most things in its path. 1.2 Billion dollars damage to homes, vehicles other property and more.

I rushed over to the storage yard of my old Triple E TT and was relieved to find it totally intact.

It has been sitting in storage, unused for a long time because we have another one, nicer, newer, bigger. Figured I'd sell it one day...

A month later in July we had another hail storm blow through, this one nowhere near as bad.

This time I didn't bother checking on it. Bad decision, guess I should have checked anyways.

I stopped by today to do a random check and as soon as I pulled up to it my heart skipped a beat. My TT is very heavily damaged.

The tail lights are smashed off and laying on the ground. The aluminum siding is peppered with hundreds of dents. Busted plastic all over the ground. Even my hot water tank door was hanging open.

Went inside for a look, both roof vents and my fantastic fan, smashed to bits. One screen laying on the floor beside the bed, pummeled and crumpled. All 3 openings have been wide open since July, rain has entered, soaked the jackknife sofa, the bed has had lots of rainwater pour in. Fortunately I have a waterproof mattress cover on it and I left a blanket and comforter in the middle of it, right under the roof vent.

Shards of broken plastic spread everywhere.... What a mess...

Climbed up on the roof, the AC cover is destroyed along with the vents. All the fins on the back of the unit are beat flat. Strangely, the fridge vent is unscathed except a crack in one corner.
The moulding inserts are all destroyed and more.

All I can say is golly gosh shucks I wish that hadn't of happened...

So much for selling it as good used TT. Shame, it was in decent shape for its age.

No insurance on it, I took it off because it was not being used.

Oh well, such is life I guess. Not sure what I will do with it now. I'll have to at least replace the roof vents and the FF cover, throw a tarp over the AC. Sell it for parts, I don't know yet, still absorbing what happened.

Hmmmm...

Charlie, the stories will never end!

But having stopped my lone out of town working excursions, there is less to tell.

The butter story, the underwear story - taking my fridge for a walk end over end around the parking lot when it quit, other stories - it all makes me smile! :B It was all a great ride, loved every minute of it!

I have another camper.

I have been meaning to change the TT in my sig pic to my current rig, but I cannot find any software on my Win 10 machine to resize it to suit the rules. Don't remember what I used the last time, I had Photoshop on my old computer but not this one.

Yeah, guess I should figure it out and change my sig!

The frozen underwear story is great too. If I'm in the right crowd and I tell the right people the story right I can get a Ewww reaction.

I think you should sell the parts. Then get another camper. Then start all over again ! That way I can have more stories to tell about this guy I once heard about.

......should have, could have, would have

1. Hindsight shows you should have sold it when you first had the idea

2. ALWAYS insure anything of value -- the lower the value, and the less it's used, the cheaper the insurance.

Sorry for your loss.

Happy travels!

Tow it back to your house and file a claim on your home owners insurance. They fixed my truck several years ago when a 20'x10' yard tent in our backyard blew up against and over my truck in a wind storm.

Sorry, but that doesn't sit well with me. Unless I could 100% legitimately claim it, I will eat the loss and know I did the right thing.
I could call the home insurance people, but I would tell them it was not at the home, it was not insured, it was in a paid storage facility miles from home etc. But I still wouldn't feel right about it, so I'm not going to try.

Wow guys, I never stated not to be straight forward with them. I believe in being super transparent and it's always worked well for me (and it's the adult thing to do). As I stated, get it out of the storage lot that you are paying for. Call your rep and see what they can do and if your home owners covers it. Good luck...that's the end of me taking my time to try and help a guy out with some ideas.

I'm sorry your camper got damaged. I to got hit with Hail this summer but, not that bad. I just have a dimpled TT now.

I agree with the Part It Out suggestion. I helped a friend do that once to a TT. After he parted it out and sold everything salvageable from the inside he then used the frame of the trailer to build a utility trailer. He made money all around.

I will never forget the butter story. I tell it to people around the campfire sometimes. It's always good for a laugh.

Hi Bob,

Part it out. I'm sorry but--even with your labor being free with it sitting soaked for months it is now DOA.

If you miss it--just put some butter over a heating vent in the new RV.

LOL!
Yup, I will never live that one down!! I'm amazed how many people here remember that, as it was a number of years ago now. I still laugh thinking about it. :B

Actually just did a quick Google search and although some homeowners insurance won't cover RVs at all, and some require you to list it, some also cover them even if you store it off the property at a storage lot. This aligns with what I was told by my insurance rep. Even said some will give you a discount for storing it at a professional storage lot because reduced risks. I'd say it's definetely worth a call. They will total it and low ball you but a few grand is better than nothing.

The word fraud comes to mind, but maybe that's just me.

Nah, I'd be up front with them but call your insurance rep. If you're anything like me then you've paid thousands a year on property, houses, buildings, cars, trucks, trailers, motorcycles. Boats, ect... and never use it. That truck is my only claim in the last 20 years. So when I called they were super happy to help...impressive in fact. Now in my case the picnic canopy and truck were in fact in my yard from my son's birthday party the day before but I know they've told me my home owners will cover other things whether it was on my property or not. Just depends on how good your insurance company is.

Yeah, that isn't just a dusting of fraud either. Fudging on the location and date of loss are big no-nos. Something tells me they're even more persnickety about insurance fraud up in CA than we are down here.

I think I'd stick to the zen viewpoint that the OP has already expressed: The rig was good while it lasted and saved him bags of money.

I've never been in jail before, but I think I'd hate it.
