New to RV,when traveling how do you know what areas to avoid

Unfortunately, as you know, poverty and crime go hand in hand. I think there are on line census maps that color code metro area zip codes by affluence. For example, north Dallas is relatively well off and has low crime. You might see if you can access those to use as a guide of high crime areas to avoid.
