well last week, on vacation, tub cracked. who knows about this?factory replacment style?up graded tubs??possable damage under from water?how to not have this happen again?etc?

Tub probably cracked because of inadequate support underneath, a not uncommon problem.  Replace the tub and improve support.  When you order a replacement you'll need to provide the length x width, whether it's a left or right hand drain, and colour - white or usually parchment.
