- tatestExplorer IISeen plenty of them, Class 3 by DOT definitions, on the HiLux compact truck.Still available globally, we stopped getting them when Toyota had to start building a truck in the US for US market only because of the chicken tax. Decided the HD versions wouldn't sell enough here to be worth making.
Truck capacity doesn't have much to do with engine size or even cab size. Much of the worlds goods moves around in 20-ton trucks with engines 2.5 liters or smaller, at speeds under 80 kph. - JarlaxleExplorer IIMy friend has an ex-UHaul Toyota dually...he loves it. Like all of the UHauls, its a V6/auto.
- wanderingbobExplorer III wonder what the definition of a one ton is ? Or half and three quarter ?
I think my wife is one ton ! - BigRabbitManExplorerIt wasn't long ago that, as I was passing one of them on the road, I thought about how many of them that are still on the road. There are lots of them still plugging away.
- RV_daytraderExplorerwhat??...a 1 ton toyota...I dont believe it, I would have to see one!
- msmith1199Explorer IIToyota 1 ton
From the above link: "The full-sized T100 was not Toyota’s first high-capacity truck; a 3/4 ton truck had been sold before. In 1983, it was rated as having a capacity of 1,800 lb, and was also sold in unfinished camper and commercial cab/chassis form, and with a diesel option. A one-ton model came later (at least by 1985, when it had the 22RE engine), and in 1987 the one-ton Toyota truck had a 2,655 pound payload and could tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped, though with a 116 horsepower 2.4 liter engine, it must have been interesting to drive with that load." - msmith1199Explorer II

Toyota 3/4 & 1 tons where common for that era. Toyota's where popular for small commercial trucks with custom boxes and delivery shells. They where totally gutless though. I drove a couple and hated them when it came to hills. I always worried about the brakes too, but they seemed to do okay.
I recall back then seeing Toyota 1 ton trucks too. At least on the tailgate they said 1 Ton, but I did always wonder if they really meant it because they were compact trucks. - deleted-2Explorer
Hee hee... - opnspacesNavigator III worked on quite a few v6 powered 1 ton dually Toyota uhaul trucks back in the 90's. They were always having head gasket (all toyota V6 trucks did of that era did)leaks and warped exhaust manifolds.
- wanderingbobExplorer III had one in the 80s . Had it shipped to the Virgin Islands , could not keep clutches in it as it was driven daily by 4 or 5 different college kids who did not know what that extra pedal on the floor was for . Gutless wonder !
