Permanent camp site - outdoor rug edging options

We have a camper at a campground in Western NY that is permanently parked.

Our 12 year old outdoor carpet needs replaced. We have it outlined in landscape timbers anchored with rebar. Likewise, the landscape timbers need replaced.

Many in our campground have installed decks. I would love to, but we plan to move from a fifth wheel to a Park model in two years when we retire. A deck may not lineup with a Park model like it does with our RV. So a binded outdoor carpet is a cost effective option (~$450).

The carpet sits on small river gravel. What is a good material to outline the carpet other than landscape timbers?

We have almost fallen several times during a rain when the top of the landscape timbers were wet.

Comments are welcomed on other options.
  • When we had our permanent site, we edged our rug (which was the fake green grass) with 1" thick pavers. They held the edges of the carpet down well, but we did a lot of stumbling until we got used to it. It worked well until we built decks.
  • Have you ever seen horse stall mats? They are very heavy about 4ftx6ft rubber mats and cost about $40 each. We are temporarily in a brand new oilfield camp in Texas and these have been lifesavers. We bought ours at Tractor Supply Company.
  • I don't want the pavers sitting on top of the carpet. I would dig out a trench, use some leveling sand and set them where they are near level with the carpet edge.

I am concerned that winter weather will cause them to heave and I will have to reset every year.

Thanks for the comments. Just looking for alternatives to landscape timbers.

Why not just dig a trench in about 6 inches from the edges and just run the edges down in the trench and fill the trench and smooth it out since it is temporary?
  • Could you post a pick of your current set up? I'm having a hard time visualizing the landscape edging holding down the carpet. I guess the reason is you slipping on them when it rains. I have my FW on a seasonal site (we pull out a few times a year), I have seen many neat examples of patio solutions. Snap a pic.
  • Thanks for the replies.

My carpet is 7'6" x 21' long. I have standard landscape timbers that are roughly 1/2 buried in the ground. I then have small river gravel that goes to maybe 1/2" to the top of the landscape timers.
Our current carpet sits on top of the gravel base and it is just barely touching the inside edges of the landscape timbers. The timbers are the frame and the carpet is the canvas ( relating to a picture). The carpet sits just inside of the timbers. Nothing is holding the carpet down.

We want to retire in 2016 and our RV will then be 12 years old. Right now we plan to get a large park model versus our current fifth wheel. I don't want to invest in a deck as it may conflict with the Park Model.

So I am looking for a very nice carpet with some trim around it. I am looking for any and all ideas on providing a nice upscale look without investing in a deck. Your comments are appreciated. Thank you.
  • If your current set up has served you well for 12 years why not replace what you have. just apply a heavily textured paint to the top of the landscape timbers to act as an anti-slip surface. There are also recycled rubber garden edging that might work for you.

  • Wow, on second thought, that rubber stuff is expensive.
