I realize that backpackers in the wilderness often dig "catholes"; but I'm going to assume that anywhere you can drive a vehicle, will offer rather "dense" concentrations of catholes, which should be discouraged.
We carry a Luggable Loo with kitty litter and WAG bags. Yes, this puts a plastic bag and the contained pathogens in a landfill - which is better, IMO, that the possibility of pathogens leaching into our surface waters from catholes.
