I have had that same issue on several ocasions, After several attempts to lessen the pressure, I usually end up removing the pins and lifting it from the truck.
Once I moved the truck out of the way, I insert a screw driver into the bracket holding the kingpin while jiggling the handle and it slowly opens up to where I can slide the hitch off the plate.
Not being familiar with the word caul, I looked it up and Miriam and Webster give a diffrent meaning.
