Question about Equilizer Socket Bolts

Just did my first tow with my new Equilizer hitch over the 4th of July. Towed the trailer about 600 miles and was very pleased with the setup.

A question about the socket bolts though; I torqued them to 60 lbs before leaving on the trip. A few days later, when I went to hitch up, I noticed one of the sockets was very loose, such that you could easily move it back and forth with your hand.

Is this due to initial "break-in" of the sockets, or do they need to be torqued before leaving each time? Not a problem if they do as it only takes a few seconds to tighten them up. Other than that, I love the EQ hitch and it's night and day improvement over my old EZ Lift.
  • I torque them before each long trip. Note that after several trips it rarely moves at all. Just needs to wear out any high points.
  • We towed probably close to 6000 miles with an EQ. I noticed the same thing also. One thing I never did try and that was to maybe use a NyLock nut along with the split lock washer. That way you would have dbl the locking capabilities. Might give you some longer re-torqueing times. Just a thought.
  • They need to be checked and tightened before every towing session. What you experienced is not unusual at all.
