Refer

Not sure this is the place but someone will move it.
Where does one purchase a residential fridge to replace the existing Dometic? Is the new unit a dealer install or a DIY? Approx. cost of a new unit. All info accepted.
  • A new rv frig coast over 2 Grand. I installed a house frig in my fiver and did it all myself (with help from a neighbor). Problem is getting one that will fit thru the door. Get you a dent and scratch unit for 200.00 and don't sweat the warranty.
  • Agree with all the above posts. Home depot, Lowes, Sears. Remove the old one, measure up the hole and go shopping. Trim it in as required. Although some will run from modified sine wave if you are starting from scratch with an inverter go with a sine wave. You will never regret going residential. If you intend to dry camp make sure you modify your battery bank and add sufficient solar to compensate for the extra current draw. Not a biggy but factor it into the budget.
  • Depending what you choose to put in the space, you can find one to fit with little or no modification. As stated, measure, and then shop. DH just installed ours, it was relatively easy, and is an almost perfect fit. We did not get a large refer.

Caution...most manufacturers won't honor the warranty if installed in an RV. I've read that Samsung will, so if that's important to you, check it out. I know for a fact Frigidaire won't. Ours only cost $491.00, so we weren't really worried about the warranty since I couldn't find a Samsung to fit.

Also, make sure you plug in the new refer BEFORE installing it in your RV to make sure it works. Who would've thought ours would be defective from the factory? We didn't think to make sure it worked, so now we're having to take it out of the RV and put another one in.

Also, read up on these forums about the inverter. Some of the models need a pure sine inverter, which ours is not. Since we never boondock, we've decided to only run ours on shore power. From what I've read, it'll stay cool while traveling if you're careful about how often you open the door. When you stop for lunch, you can run the genny which will power it for a little while and then plug it in when you stop at your destination.
  • Home Depot, Lowes or any place that sells appliances. You have to do your own homework as far as fitment though because they will not know whats going to fit.
I would find a smaller independent RV repair shop to do the install because it will take some fabrication. When your all done it will probably cost as much or more than just replacing the cooling unit on the old fridge.
  • Measure for the size that will fit in your camper (old fridge's space). Go anywhere you like to find one of that size (or very close). Buy it and put it in yourself. It ain't a really hard job and only a few basic tools required.
