Refrigerator skin

My fridge has a stainless steel skin on the doors. Not very attractive and I suspect the original owner used some cleaner on it that wasn't the best choice. It appears that I should be able to slide it out and replace it with a wood panel to match the cabinets. There is about 1/8" clearance around the trim. Has anyone done this? I have not tried to force it and it seems to be "stuck" in the center of the panel. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  • Yes, do post some photos when you get a chance -- hope you have some before and after...
  • Update on the project. After researching here, I cut and stained some 1/8" birch plywood. I then carefully slid the plywood panels in the grooves on the freezer and fridge doors. I left the stainless skins in because of the double stick tape that adhered them to the door insulation. The wood panels are tight enough to prevent any movement but hopefully will allow expansion/contraction due to temperature changes. The wood panels look a lot better than the stainless and my wife is very happy with the look. Sorry, no photos yet,
  • After further investigation on my fridge, thae panels have double-stick foam tape holding them to the fridge insulation. This probably prevent any rattling and noise. I am planning to gently remove the SS panels and install a wooden panel. I can stain the wood to match the cabinets. There is about 1/8" clearance so I may be able to slide the wood panel over the SS panel.
  • The panels on my Norcold match the paneling and I can actually slide them around a bit if I push on them. Stainless panels are also available.
  • Contact the MFG. (Dometic, Norcold etc.)
Provide them with the model number and ask......
Can I change the front panels?
If YES....How do I do it?
Where can I get new panels?

They (MFG.) would have that info.
  • have you researched the owners manual? if you don't have one for the fridge just google the reefer name and model number.
  • I'm guessing that the fridge panel may be similar to dishwasher panels. Our old dishwasher had a reversable panel--different colors, and also had 1 or 2 replacement panels in different colors in behind the exposed panel. Is there an edging that can be removed along the top or side? If so, you may be able to slide out the current panel and find other colors behind it. Also, might not. But it's worth a try.
  • I think many of the frig's do come with replaceable decorative exterior panels. I think we could change ours if we wanted to but our is already the wood. I have seen this same model in stainless, black and an almond color so I'm thinking that's how they do it.
