Replace or Reupholster

Is it cheaper to replace the drivers and passenger seats in my DP Motorhome or have them reupholstered??
I've been told that Microfiber would stand up to Cat claws, any thoughts on this.
  • We're in Oregon now and I've had one place tell me it is cheaper to replace then reupholster. We have an extra wide co-pilot seat that we really like and both driving seats are in excellent shape except for the claw marks. I've seen a few more places on line we will check out. One in Vancouver, Wa and another in Nampa Idaho. The cat that did all the damage died last year, current cat (21 in Sep.)doesn't appear to scratch stuff.
  • Time to have a chat with the cat. Next time, out you go & you are not coming back.
  • Might a slip cover be a good start. You could remove them to wash off the cat fur as needed. If slipcover fabric(microfiber or whatever you pick) stands up to your kitty's claws and if you like the feel, then perhaps commit to a full reupholster.
  • Ultrasuede and Ultraleather don't hold up to cat claws. (Personal experience)
If you can find a fabric that does, please let us know.

Only one way to know.....get quotes on reupholster and replacements.
  • Suggest you shop both and see. We did that with sticks and bricks furniture. Cost was about the same so decided that all new was better than some new. I would guess when it comes to RV furniture reupholstering might be better. Better because less money, better padding, and perhaps better fabric than you'll get with new RV furniture.
  • We had our 10 year old Flex-Steel captain's chairs reupholstered last summer for less than half of the cost of Flex-steel replacements. They were recovered with a better quality "ultra-leather" than originally supplied.

    Just my $.02

Depends on the weight of the fabric and how well the seaming is done. You will also need to spend more time cleaning up pet hairs and worrying about static cling. Not my favorite fabric by a long shot but accepting it's a modern choice.

As to whether it's cheaper to reupholster or buy new I guess a local upholsterer's quote would help best along w/ same from whoever would sell it new.
