Replacement thermostat

I want to replace my old style thermostat in my jayco white hawk to a new digital one. I know I've seen recommendations in the past but can't find them now. If this is a mod you've done I'd like to hear about how it is as a diy project.
Thanks !
  • If you tell us the brand and model of air conditioner you have and style of thermostat we may be able to help, without that we are guessing.
  • What make/model thermostat do you have now? A photo would help if you're not sure...
  • I replaced a Dometic tstat with a Honeywell and it has worked well except one problem. Even the Honeywell service center could not figure this one out.

When leaving to go south in December I went to turn the furnace on with the MH in the driveway and the thermostat would only show LO. I needed to direct my electric heater on the thermostat until it got up above 35 degrees and then it would work. Found out the indication was that the temp was too low for the tstat to work. I knew it was cold but did not know the Honeywell home thermostat would not work in very cold temps. Once I started the heating process the furnace would kick on and then all was well.

The installation process was very straight forward and should only take minimum time for the average DIY person.
  • dalenoel, My Hunter stat did the same LO deal on me.

OP, if you get the scoop on what you need and decide to buy, I would suggest that you get a stat with a face that illuminates when you hit the first button. heck of a lot easier to read, even in the day time.
  • How easy it is to replace the thermostat with a generic one depends on what model of air conditioner and thermostat are in place already. Some use proprietary (digital) communications between the thermostat and the rest of the system and ordinary replacements won't work in those cases. Many, however, are pretty much standard and most any battery powered thermostat will work.

I upgraded the thermostat in my RV not long ago. Here's a post with some details. It was pretty straightforward once I figured out the various wire connections and naming/coding schemes.
  • I too converted my duo therm analog thermostat to a Honeywell digital. The LO temperature safety feature is covered in the owners manual, it is there in case there is a power outage and the temperature in a home drops below freezing allowing the pipes to freeze, the idea being if the home owner is away it is better for the pipes to stay frozen than for the furnace to come back on and thaw them out causing a flood. My solution in the motorhome is to grab the hair dryer out of the bathroom and warm the thermostat enough for the furnace to come on.
  • Thanks so much for the quick responses and the links. I'll get the brand/model when I go to the trailer. This at least tells me it's something we should be able to handle.

Never thought about the hair dryer. Always used the electric heater. thanks for the suggestions.
