Replacing vent cover

The cover on my bathroom vent got damaged from hail while driving. It doesn't leak, but there is a chunk missing from a corner and a crack. It so happens it is the only one on the roof and has the vent fan in it, so I would prefer not to have to replace the entire thing, plus the less roof sealing to do the better.

Can I just replace the dome?

Thanks, THose maxxair, can you drive with the vent open then?

Yes I do it all the time.I have never had a problem.

Oh another thing, I don't know how old your trailer is but while you are up there check the vinyl seal,as they age they don't seal well, they are also easy to replace. Here is one from Amazon

Thanks, since it's a 2014, and was pretty new when I got it last year(still has that new formaldehyde smell)I sure hope nothing needs replacing yet. I did notice prior to storing that the caulking around a vent looked questionable, so will hit those up good after I clean it.
  • If you go to PPLmotorhomes.com they have a diagram of the different hinge assemblys so you order the correct cover.

Interesting. I too figured it would be OK to travel with it open and one time accidentally did, but noticed an awful lot of dust coating the inside of my trailer after that tow. We were only on standard asphalt roads, no dirt roads.

That's what I assumed, but you know what they say about assume. :) Clarification is never a bad thing.
  • Thanks, I had a feeling it was something I could replace, I just need to get up there and figure out which type it is. THose maxxair, can you drive with the vent open then? Hoping to pull t out the barn this weekend, provided he ground dries up a bit more and solidifies. It was too soft last weekend, my truck would have sunk in.

It's a catch 22 though, I need to pull the trailer out, so I can get my tractor out to roll the ground, but can't pull the trailer out, until I roll the ground. Will re-think my storage strategy next fall! LOL
  • It is pretty easy to do your self first you to know the type you have then get what is needed.
Here are the types of vent lids,by the hinge type.

check yours then you will know which one to get.

I would suggest getting the Polycarbonate ones they last a lot longer. Also something like the Maxxair covers, they will make your covers last longer and you can keep your vents open in any weather.

If you haven't done it before Here is a short video on how it is done.
  • With a fan, I think it pretty much has to be a crank-open vent.

You can buy just the plastic covers and they are not hard to install; you do not need to remove the entire vent unit. There are a few different makes and models with different details of mountings and hinges. The replacements are not all that expensive, to boot.

While you're working on it, I suggest you get and install a vent cover so you can leave the unit open in the rain.
