Rubber roof skin peeling back, need advice!

I noticed my rubber roof was starting to get air bubbles underneath just behind the front cap transition. I used a tube of Dicor on the screw heads and along the seam between the front cap and the roofing material. I thought that would seal any air holes but now I notice the roof skin still ballooning up even when I am sitting still with a stiff wind blowing on the front.
I am concerned my roof will balloon up while driving down the road and tear off.
How do I get the skin fastened back down to the roof deck??
  • How old is the roof? Sounds like a classic glue failure due to either old glue or poor mfg. Your only real solution is a new roof.
  • I had the same issue in 2004. I cut the EPDM back to a point where it was well attached plus a foot or two (about 1/3rd of the way back from the front in my case). I then used a EPDM primer (Henry's I believe it was) and top coat to recover the roof boards (it was luan over 2 x2 rafters). I used the recommended (by Henry's) mesh seam tape on all seams and edges including along the cut line. It has been 12 years and the roof is till water tight and no more balloons.

I have used the same primer and top coat on boat hatches, outside yard gates, and various wood poles to protect them from the NM sun and occasional rain.

Total cost was less than $50 in 2004.
  • Check PPL Motor homes, Amazon, Ebay or any RV Supply Store for Rubber Roof Adhesive.
I would definitely try to repair the roof before I did a full replacement.
  • I would use a proper glue to bond it back down. Then run a 4" wide section of eternabond tape across the front cap and rubber roof. Make sure all is clean before putting the eternabond down. I did this 6 years ago and all is well.

  • You can loosen the gutters and the front piece that holds the roof down, pull the roofing back where it is no longer loose, and reglue it. We had this done to our previous 5th wheel and it worked just fine. We could have done it ourselves but as full timers, it is hard to do repairs like that on the road.

I thought that some or all manufacturers warranted their roofs for 10-12yrs.

    Material only not installation.
