RV Storage Space Questions

I think I've found the prefect space to store my TT but all this talk of rodents makes me wonder a bit about long winters when I'm not there.

It's an interior perimeter spot on the ground floor within a storage facility thus I'll be able to drive up to hook and un hook the unit 24/7

I have a choice of a heated and non heated spot......which do youse think makes more sense for overall TT health and especially to deter critters? The heated spot will be maintained at a constant temperature year round. I believe the brochure said 78 degrees.

The facility includes exterminating services but I'm thinking of having my own exterminator "shoot" a dispersed product into the walls on a regular basis as well. Does that sound like overkill to you?

TIA for your opinions.
  • I guess I didn't make myself clear: rodent proofing the RV is a given. My biggest current concern is rodent proofing the space the RV will be stored in. I really don't like excess residents anywhere so if they never enter my section of the storage building it's the beginning of a solution and major plus.
  • I store my 'C' and my Jeep toad in a building that I own. Its all metal with a concrete floor. There are never any small children or pets in the building, so I put poison mouse baits out. Something eats it because I've found the evidence - empty containers and dead mice. I haven't seen a new mouse in several years. They must have passed the word.
  • Put in several mouse traps, bait them with peanut butter and as tenbear did, check the traps often.

While in college I moved into a vacant trailer in January and there were mice everywhere! I'd hear them foraging through the trash at night and find mouse turds in my clothing drawers when I'd get home from classes. I bought a half dozen traps, baited them with peanut butter, checked then every day and within a few days the mouse infestation was history.

  • DutchmenSport, my thoughts exactly. I would much prefer keeping the mice out than having dead mice inside the RV. Before I sealed up the RV I used traps inside and checked them often.

The problem is, not so much, killing a rodent. The problem is a poisoned rodent dying inside your camper walls or under your floor, or inside a heat or air conditioner duct. A rotting mouse smells horrible and you absolutely cannot tell where the dead mouse is actually located. And, even if you could, you'll have to tear something apart in your camper to get the dead critter out.

We had dead mouse in our bathroom wall in our home. I could never figure out where it came from. 2 years we smelled that nasty thing. I ended up remodeling that bathroom (made it bigger, knocked out a wall, re-plumbed, re-wired, new everything from studs to finished paint. I found the mouse in the process! Needless to say, I sealed up all those walls while the studs were exposed.

What I'm saying is, you DO NOT want a dead mouse trapped in the structure of your camper.

And ... to answer your question ... of course a temperature controlled environment would be more beneficial for your camper. But it's not necessary.

How cold will the non heated spot get? If it's below freezing then you would have to winterize the TT, otherwise I don't see much reason to use the heated area. How much is it worth to avoid winterizing?

I think I would mouse proof my RV, as I did, rather than using poisons to keep the mice out, or rather kill any mice that do get in.

The non-heated space will get as cold as the NE does. I'm not trying to avoid winterizing per se ...in fact didn't even think about it in that manner. Since the locale I'm considering has overhead power lines it would make sense to winterize the TT in case the power goes off.
The difference in cost between the heated and non heated space in 13.6% annually.I can use the space to store other items off season.
Unfortunately or not I have no problem killing pests not found on the endangered lists who don't pay rent;).
