RV trips have changed things!

Hubby and I love to do last minute trips. We could be gone a night or a few weeks. We have done this for the last 25 years.

We bought our TT last year and take it wherever we can. Before the TT we always stayed in Hilton Hotels.
We like them because they are always the same. All!! bed coverings and pillows are changed daily. In fact the staff at a few automatically knew which room we would like.
The reason we bought a new TT is because we are a bit OCD about cleanliness and organization. We did not want to have something someone else had slept in.

Sadly, buying our TT has reduced my status on the Hilton Club because we don't stay there as often.

Do you still like to stay in hotels, or do you prefer to stay in your RV whenever possible?

That depends on where you are traveling. You can't just pull off anywhere and spend the night with your RV. You have to find some place legal and safe if you wish to dry camp. Some areas thats more difficult than others.

We have a beautiful RV. I call it my portable Ritz Carlton Suite. But for the past 40 years I have traveled for business and pleasure staying in hotels. I have flown over 3,000,000 miles and stayed in hotels thousands of nights. Not one time have I ever seen or been bitten by a bed bug. At least not that I knew it. I love staying in our RV on trips. We are at a small rally right now in AZ. But!, unless you gotta sailboat too your not going to Europe, Asia, Australia, Hawaii, Africa, Antarctica, New Zealand, England, Galapagos, Santorini, other Greek Isles, Tahiti, Bora Bora, other paradisiacal south Pacific Islands, and so on.

There are so many great places to go and an RV will only get you to some of them. Plus there are many many hotels and inns that are lovely, historic, or luxurious. True air travel these days has sunk to abysmal comfort level. That is what martini's are for. For those of us who are non-drinkers, such as myself, treat yourself to first class in USA travel, that gets rid of 90% of the travel bummers. On international routes you just have to go without baths or showers for two weeks before your travel date. That clears away some of the people. International air by first class is totally overpriced and not worth it. You just have to grin and bear it. Put Paris France on your bucket list and just go. Or Sydney Australia, a truly gorgeous city.

So stop whining and buy some Rick Steves books or DVD's. If you can afford it and have the time, travel is one of the only things that is fun and good for you.

We stayed in a hotel 5 or 6 times since the last 13 yrs... mostly weddings and 1 anniversary trip.

In the future we do hope to mix in more trips that are none RV related.

We spend as many nights as possible in the RV when traveling. Due to the cost of fuel and towing, it doesn't make sense to always RV. When we head north to see the grand kids, we spent a night at at hotel. I also ran into a bedbug situation at a Drury Hotel in MO. We also had a bed bug infestation at our house this spring. We think my wife got them transferred to her luggage in the belly of a plane from other people's luggage. It is a real PITA and expensive to eliminate them. We carefully check hotel rooms for signs of bedbugs before we stay.

It is nice to know the RV is maintained to personal cleanliness standards. We also like cooking ourselves rather than eating in restaurants.

Always prefer staying in the RV. DW and I have to travel down to Aberdeen, SD in few weeks for the Dakotas Fair Convention staying at the Ramkota Inn and the bed bug stories always give me the creeps. Not to go totally "Howard Hughes germ phobia" we always spray the TV remotes and bathroom down with Lysol. Only once, maybe twice a year we stay in hotels.

I know a couple that are so obsessed about things that they take a plastic cover that zips oer the mattress etc and take there own bedding and pillows if they have to stay in a hotel. They carry a bag the size of a hockey bag with all their own linen. We are not that bad, LOL

I think that if most folk are like us, there is nothing better than your own place. Your own bed etc. We realize we will have to stay in hotels overseas but we shall enjoy the comfort of our own place, our TT when we can.

Hubby does not want anyone staying over in our trailer except immediate family.

Maybe there are CG's out there that have some sort of club program that have special offers.,

We will choose our MH over any hotel or motel. We choose it over staying in our sons or daughters home. We do occupy our sons driveway twice a year for a couple weeks at a time but we stay in our MH.
If we have an occasion to travel several hundred miles to a short stay, week or less, we will use a motel because its cheaper than a campground plus the MH fuel. You have to do the math to see if its the right thing to do.
I'll bet that the majority of people will choose their RV over a hotel, all things being equal.

Sometimes a hotel is part of destination. We recently visited the Biltmore Estate and stayed at the Inn to enjoy the fine dining, although we camped at State Parks coming & going. Other times a campground might be a bit too far away to easily accommodate the schedule you have in mind. So there are reasons to do both.

A lot of the RV spending goes on a credit card that earns points toward hotel lodging, so the occasional free hotel room is (partially) another RV benefit.

EDIT: Granted it's easier to do "mixed" hotel/camping trips in a Class B. Parking is no problem.

Unfortunately for us a hotel night always stands between our house & the trailer. Getting there or back home is a very long day of a car ride to the airport, 2 flights totalling up to 6 hours, an hour shuttle ride, get our truck & by then it is too late to get the trailer out of storage & to the nearest CG.

The good news is that the trip is always at least 8 weeks long making the long commute & hotel night well worth it.

I only fly and stay in hotels when required for business travel. Absolutely hate both. Only time I will consider flying and hoteling for pleasure is when vacation opportunities arise outside of the US, and that isn't often.

When we stay in hotels, it feels like we're cheating on our camper.

my wife and i were avid hotelers for many years, and loved it, but since we got our tt, we are into the rv travel. for us it's cheaper. we went to seattle this summer and spent $4K - on the round trip from southern ca. , and that includes everything! we would spend half that much on just flying and staying at decent hotel in seattle for four nights.
