Just have to wonder if as stated permanent resident, the MH wouldn't start? The new caster spoke of no time to pack up, heck start, drop power, water, and sewer and move!

They may not have had any fuel in the RV. If you are using it as a stationary permanent residence, why would you keep fuel in the tank to gunk up.

Flash floods like that can happen and they don't give you a lot of time to prepare.

In addition, a lot of "permanent residents" in RV Parks don't have the ability to move the RV. They may have paid someone to move a trailer into the spot, so don't have a truck that can tow it. They may not have any fuel in the motorhome. They may have stuff stored under and/or around the RV.

So moving it quickly may seem easy for those of us who travel, but it's not that way for everyone living in an RV.

Just and FYI, that "river" is normally just a dry sandy wash (rode motorcycles in it back in the day.) The water was an overnight surprise.

Valencia Travel Village is just up the creek from the old Indian Dunes MX park. It's also near the spot where Vic Morrow and the child actors died while filming The Twilight Zone Movie.

It's usually a dry creek, but there are documented accounts of the Spanish explorers sailing up the Santa Clara river miles past that site, long before the river and the aquifers would be used up for municipal drinking water.

I doubt these people just let their RVs fall into the river for an insurance payout.

Per the news article I linked, the RV caught on video was a permanent resident who was unable to get everything moved in time.

There were two other RVs that fell in.

While it's sad to see the RV's hit the water, you have to wonder why the owners didn't just drive them away. The Class A they showed going over has a home A/C units in the bedroom window and the front roof A/C appears damaged ad well. Maybe the insurance claim made leaving it there part of the decision.

And on a related topic: from Ottawa (approx. where I'm from) the Rideau Canal ("longest skating rink in the world") isn't going to open this year because of thin ice for the first time since it started in 1971.

Nooooooo!!!! That is just sad. I remember my first trip to Ottawa and hearing how folks would ice skate to and fron work on the canal. That just brought such wonderful images.

With the drought, the ground is no longer stable. The tree roots have shrunk and moved to the topsoil, so there is no structure holding the dirt together. When the rains come, enbankments and cliffsides just collapse.

A good reminder to think about where you are parking and in what conditions. This type of stuff is going to keep happening.

As,an additional caution: be careful about parking under/near redwoods. Redwoods have shallower root systems than other trees. In natural settings, they counter this by interconnecting their roots with the other nearby redwoods. This creates a strong support system for the tall trees, keeping them from toppling. However, when the trees are planted by man, they tend to be planted singly - with only one or two redwoods in close contact. This means that the trees do not have the support system at their roots to counter their shallowness. Add the drought and erosion of the topsoil, and these trees are far more likely to topple in a storm.
