Self-driving home anyone?

Hi guys,
I came across an article and became curious to know your opinion on the matter. Driverless cars are already looming on the horizon and there also projects to make motorhomes that will take you to work while you're having coffee or shower, travel longer without the need to stop while you sleep (seems cool to me). Though would you care to live in such conditions all the time? To me it's a great option for trips, but not sure I would choose to sell my house and forget about it for good 😄 (source https://tranio.com/world/spotlight/self-driving-mobile-homes-how-driverless-cars-will-change-the-pro...)

I guess I am old school. Learned to drive in a 1946 British stick shift that had all cable brakes, cable clutch & a 1/4 turn play in the wheel where nothing happened. Didn't get my first automatic vehicle till 10 years ago. The tow vehicle in my sig.

I still take driving quite seriously. Don't eat or use the phone while driving. The cruise control only gets used on relatively flat interstates or similar.

However, autonomous driving is appealing especially in light traffic, long distance, situations where the risk of falling asleep due to boredom is high. My biggest fear is the idiot on the phone, not on autonomous driving, running into me when I am not giving my driving full attention.

Am I the only one that, still at 74, likes to drive? Always have and probably will as long as I'm able. I'm an old "car guy" lover of drag racing, etc. I would really miss it, yet I know we humans make way too many dangerous mistakes.

Hopefully it'll take another 30 years & I won't care, I don't think you should be driving after 100 anyways. 😉

I will admit that I like the idea of all the collision avoidance options available today since half of the drivers out there are looking down at their phones.

I do not think we will see it get to the point of self driving for any distance but in an RV's case it would be nice if in traffic under 20MPH or so it would take over to just relax or look at maps etc...

We already have driverless cars. Look around. How many heads are bent down or looking to the side fiddling with phones? How many are distracted yapping on the phone? How many are busy eating while driving?

Yeah, give is automated cars, especially ones that self drive as soon as a phone is activated.

A big issue with people understanding driving automation is it's not necessarily all or nothing.

A lot of driver-less features are already on the market (not so much for MH's but they are a very small market). Adaptive cruise control, lane assist, etc...are all features that are out there and working. I got to ride in a driver-less semi 3yrs ago on an urban freeway open to traffic (not a closed course).

The biggest hurdle to driver-less cars is not the technology but the liability. Yeah, there will be failures but for every computer caused failure, if you eliminate 10 human caused failures it's a net win. The problem is the lawyers will be all over any failure in the systems until it moves mainstream. Eventually though, it will be the lawyers vs the insurance salesmen. Once they have the data, insurance companies will give huge discounts for automated cars because they so much safer that it will drive the market.

The second biggest hurdle is market penetration. Given that it takes 15-20yrs for the fleet to turn over, even if every car produced from today on is fully automated, it will still be a long time before they are all converted over.

Driverless vehicles with respect to riders who just want to get somewhere while doing whatever they want have been available for decades ... the last time I checked they were called "taxies".

Rich folks have them sitting out front full time merely waiting for their order to go wherever the rich folks want without them having to drive.

The rest of us have to pick up the mobile phone or stick our arm out while standing on the curb for us to order up transportation to go wherever we want without us having to drive.

I worked in the integrated circuit ("chip") industry for over 32 years testing for reliability/failure problems in them and have also struggled with multiple computers and their various software/hardware problems for years - starting with the PC Junior, so ..... I'll never trust a driveless vehicle any further than I can throw it.

Sometimes I think that modern futurists/engineers/designers/marketing-jocks have watched the original Blade Runner flick way too many times.

Now think about all those 'smart cars/trucks/MHs' having glitches while out on the road.

Heck 'auto correct' can't even get it right....just read some of the posts on here :B

NO Thanks!

I hope that I am not the only one, but I enjoy driving. Not about to give that up to some robot.

You're not alone and I know of at least one other person who feels the same. So maybe between the three of us we can save the world from the robots.

Don't know how long it will take for the technology and the infrastructure to be created but I hope it is before my kids have to make a decision on taking my keys from me. Driverless cars would greatly aid in helping a person to maintain their independence longer.

Whenever this subject comes up, I always like to point everyone to watch this youtube video. It's been "out there" a few years now, but it's still priceless. Hang in there till the end ... although the title kind of gives it away. Still, the end is pretty cool... something to think about... really.

I routinely see people texting while driving. I’ve also seen people reading books, putting on makeup, and even typing on a laptop while driving. Whether cars or motorhomes, driverless vehicles are sounding pretty good.
