Spare Fuel

There is a lake up in the High Sierra we tow our 5er to, and the nearest diesel is a 45 minute drive back down the mountain. I always pack a 5-gallon can of diesel when we go up there.

A view like this makes taking fuel along worthwhile......

There are some fuel stops between Charleston, WV and Lexington, KY on I64 but they don't look very user friendly to a large truck (gasser) with a 30"TT.

I just make sure to watch for the highway gas signs that have the little emblem for each of the stores on them. When I see one with multiple and can see a few of them right around the exit, I know my chances of having at least one of them with a large enough parking lot and room for me to get in increases. As you approach, do as I do and look for the easiest pull in that will leave plenty of room to exit. The main two considerations are the amount of space after the last pump before you have to start turning and how much room you have to swing wide in prep for that turn. I generally like the isles on the ends for that reason.

Having trouble with the time to pour fuel from containers sounds like a venting issue with those goofy new style jugs.
Remedy: look for UTUBE video showing venting solution using tire valve stem installed in upper part of jug handle area. It only involves one 1/2 inch hole and a valve stem with the core removed. Tried it and it works great!!

When I got my fiver I hurt the side of it pulling into a gas station trying to manueuever around the concrete safety things. From then on I carried 4- 5 gal cans of diesel and 1 5 gal can of gas. Never again will I attempt to go into a regular station. The extra cans saved my bacon more than once. I might add that we never take the major highways so that eliminates the truck stops.

I always keep a couple 5 gallon cans of gas handy in my truck's bed, secured with a ratchet strap through the handle so they don't bounce around or topple over. This fuel is mainly for the generator, but I've saved friends letting them use the gas for an emergency top-off.

The most elegant setup are Rotopax installs. These are low-profile, 2-4 gallon containers as mentioned above. My next RV setup will be a motorhome towing a small cargo trailer (4-5 feet width) for my boondocking expeditions. With this, I can mount Rotopax containers on the front of the trailer which will still allow for extended fuel range, but with the use of locking T-handles, the containers will tend to not disappear.

X2 I just completed a 200 mile loop to the coast, didn't even think about fuel.

Trust me on this when I drove up to NY from SC there were a few stations that were difficult to get into with my long bed crew cab. There are some areas in the NY city NJ area that are probably almost impossible for the fuel trucks to get into during the day time. I am guessing they have to deliver at night when there aren't any cars blocking off the station. Once I get out of the NY city area and into Suffolk County LI it is easier to find a station they are going to cost you fifty cents to a dollar more per gallon
