The Death of The Samboree?!

So, at our last Good Sam Club meeting our president brought news from our state chapter that Good Sam Corporate was planning on changing the name of "Samboree" to "Camp Out" to better market the RV Lifestyle.

Anyone else out there hear of this?!

Might be a great club but I never could get over the silly name and the goofy guy in the logo. Sorry if I offend.

Louisiana does have a problem with the timing of their Samboree. Being in the South Region - they are part of a three state spring or fall samboree swing.

Yes, there are a lot of folks traveling through the circuit - mainly because the timing of the events makes it convenient.

With the Texas Samboree in Waco one weekend, the Louisiana Samboree in Shreveport the next, and the Arkansas Samboree in Texarkana the next - it's nice three week circuit.

All three states have very large out of state attendance at their samboree. At the last Louisiana Samboree we attended - Texas rigs out numbered Louisiana rigs. I've been told that the out-of-state rigs are vital to being able to raise enough money for the samboree to be held.

It seems from talking to folks in Louisiana Good Sams - that the state really has a younger average age than the other states of chapter members. And a great many still work/ are not retired. And they aren't willing to take vacation time in April for a Samboree.

Also the location of the event in Shreveport does not make it easy for folks from the southern part of the state to get to the event if they want to just take one day off and come in for the weekend.

The idea of moving the Samboree date to June, July or August faces obstacles from national Good Sams, but a case could probably be made.

However, if LA weather is anything like Texas, or like I remember from my youth (I grew up on the LA/AR state line - an hour from both Shreveport and Texarkana) - those months are the worst of the year for camping.

Another issue is finding a venue with the facilities to support 100-150 rigs. Rayne has the facilities. The casino at Marksville has been used in the past.

Are there any other locations within the state with that capacity?

50amp electric, water and hopefully sewer are needed, especially if the event is held in the summer months.

Do you belong to a local area chapter?

Most of state chapters are based south of I-10. Which is another reason an early spring samboree in Shreveport doesn't attract much in-state attendance.

I've met folks in Texas and Georgia who came to Good Sam and tried to find a chapter, but realized they were much younger and had different interests / camping goals than most of the state members. So the state directors helped both of them found their own chapter.

They only camp at state and federal (COE/ USFS) parks. Don't want to spend the weekend in the club room playing cards. They host bonfires, do hikes together, etc.

You could start your own chapter, and build it into something that can support the state organization.

Yes, sambroees can be expensive - but they are expensive to run, and from the financials I've seen - they barely break even.

I've never gone to one, but we did make reservations for one last fall in wine country in middle Calif. It sounded like a lot of fun and we thought that the package was very reasonable. I'm sorry we had to cancel.

Never been to one, have no desire to attend one...Alway's held so far away it was inane to try to attend one anyway....and as stated, YES....they are expensive, more than I want to pay to camp on top of each other...Just another way to bring in money....The local chapers when 10-15 members camp at certain campgrounds on occasion is much nicer, less hectic and usally at a campground that most can afford..

No big deal...I didn't start rv'ing back in 70' to go camping in a crowd and pay more than one normally would for no particular reason....Just another gimmick....nothing more, nothing less. Again, nothing wrong with locals.

........anyway, as stated by the Good Sam club rep...they're looking for younger people. I'll be 65 in July....so I'm not really welcomed anyway.....The younger generation can have it......

Ohio Samborees are less $$ than staying at a state park and at the Samboree all entertainment and some meals are included.

The Ohio Samboree coming up in two weeks is $45 for the two night event and early nights are $10 each night. Those prices are per rig/family.

The summer Ohio Samboree is $65 for three nights.

Most members of our chapter don't attend Samboree's any longer. Our state director brought up the possible name change recently to the chapter presidents, and our chapter president called us directly - since we do attend Samboree's regularly - to ask our opinion.

I'm not sure the name change will help.

The biggest issue I see with Good Sam Chapters is that so many are filled only with older members who actually don't want new members, especially young members. There are only a couple chapters that I know of who camp at public parks (state parks / COE) - that actively visit with others in the park and talk about Good Sam Chapters.

While camp hosting - we've talked to many people about Good Sam and Chapter membership. Most find the idea of calling the state wide meet a Samboree old fashioned and unfriendly to new people.

We attend a Samboree a month ago in a state far removed from our home region - and were surprised as how few people would take time to talk with us.

They seemed to be concerned with their chapter, and not interacting with other chapters or visitors.

Not very interested in attracting new members.

Thanks for your comments!

One of the challenges many of our chapter members have voiced to us over the last several years is โ€œto help us get new and younger members into the clubโ€.

At an annual meeting of the Good Sam Club Regional Directors we brought this challenge to the regional directors. Each of these 9 regional directors are long-standing chapter members and most of them are former state or provincial directors. As we were discussing how we might be able to help chapter members attract younger families at the samborees, it was brought to our attention that a lot of people donโ€™t really know what the term โ€œ Samboreeโ€ means โ€“ unless they have attended one.

It was decided at this meeting that each of the regional directors would poll the state/provincial directors and ask them how they would feel about possibly changing the name of Samboree. The overwhelming response was that they would like to try changing the name Samboree to Good Sam RV Rally (Samboree). Of course, the state or province name would be in the title as well. For example: The Kentucky Good Sam RV Rally (Samboree). The goal was to begin introducing this in 2016.

If you would like to voice your concern regarding the name change or have any other ideas, I strongly encourage you to make you voice heard. Please reach out to your state/provincial/regional director so that your opinion can be registered. You can find a listing of all state directors on the chapters web site at www.GoodSamClub.com/chapters. You may also reach out to me directly at the email address listed below.

I was told that Samboree is out and rally is in. Our local campouts have always been campouts.

A few years ago we weren't allowed to refer to a Samboree as a rally because only the national club had "The Rally". Now they want us to call Samborees a rally.

The hierarchy of Good Sam changes their policies as often as the wind changes directions. As a chapter officer I have seen constant confusion and change in the last several years. I am tired of the silliness, especially since management considers the club as only a "marketing tool" for the sale of RV goods and services.

Thanks for the (sad) confirmation. I wonder what newbie bonehead in marketing came up with THAT bright idea?

And, sadly, you are right about the "Good Sam Machine" It seems like camping world has been on a buying spree of late - it has gobbled up several large RV dealers here in the south and turned them into Camping World supercenters.

If this keeps up, DW and I will stop being active Good Sam members and get involved in other activities like the Escapees or the Forest River Owners Group
