The new Toad. Smart car Electric Drive cabrio

Here is Angelas new car and eventual new Toad. We will haul it on the same trailer as we did the other one. Its a little wider and longer than its replacement but it still fits. Funnest car we have ever driven and it has all kinds of Jam. Yee haw. Angela is racking up the miles a lot faster than she was on her CDI. makes me think she is just looking for a reason to go somewhere. :) More pictures to come later out by the lake.

  • The old one was actually smaller?

    Cool car, congrats and enjoy.

Heh heh. Yah, hard to believe but the 450 is actually smaller by 6 inches, a little shorter and almost three inches narrower. The old one is a diesel, (now gone to a new home) and the diesels tend to be a little dogish but also fun to drive. Great mileage (mid 60's) but obviously no where near as cheap to run as the Electric. No oil, oil filters, air filters, fuel filters, belts, hoses etc. We went to kelowna and back and then put 16 kilowatts in her when we got home. At 11 cents per kilowatt thats about 1.71 to go 120 KM round trip. Not to bad. :)

Here is a picture of the old oil burner. I am driving Angelas old green style cabrio now so we still have a diesel.

Here's my new (to me) wheels. Looking good at 10 years old. (Not Angela, the car). :)

  • Are you set up to charge it right at the campsite? Do you have metered electric? Just curious how that works....would be a REALLY good deal if you aren't metered! :)

Well, we have our own site in the north and one in California as well so yes when we are on our own site. The car has a built in 3.3KW charger and can be charged from any 110 outlet...albeit slowly (overnight if its empty). But if you want to charge it faster (5 or 6 hours) you need the 50 amp plug (same as an RV 50 amp plug. Really I doubt that we would need a fast charge very often as it is a commuter vehicle. Essentially treat it like a cell phone and charge it overnight.

However when we will be staying in a place where the power is part of the site I don't think I would charge it on the camp ground as its not fair to the owner of the campground as I doubt that was ever part of his business plan. I would either make an arrangement with him or simply charge at one of the many level 2 charging facilities available at shopping malls, drug stores etc. I suspect some campgrounds may add charging facilities as the electric drives catch on though. :)

This car doesn't have level 3 charging capability like the leaf or the Tesla. They can charge 80 percent in 30 minutes depending on the size of the battery. Those are a lot pricier cars though. Out of my league. :)
  • What's the weight difference between the gas or diesel version vs. the EV?

The CDI diesel is 760 KG, the gas weighs 840 KG and the EV weighs 920 KG. All above for the Cabrio.
  • Here's a few taken from our lot on the lake, Angela looks good in there. The sun behind the car has a neat effect.

  • Well Hello John,
Long time no type to. Hope everything is going well for you and Angela. It appears things are. A new Smart huh? I didn't even know they made all electric ones. Heck, most people don't even know there's diesel ones either. So you're sure it's going to fit on the trailer huh? That's cool if it does. I admire your setup, always did.

It's nice to see you're having fun. How's the coach doing? You know, one of these days we have to meet. Until then, she's looking good in her new toy. Take care.
