Man’s challenge to bison goes pretty much how you’d expect

Bison, meet jackass.

A bozo was captured on cellphone video taunting a large bison in Yellowstone National Park this week.

In the less-than-1-minute-long online clip taken Tuesday by bystander Lindsey Jones, a shorts-wearing man beating on his chest is seen approaching the ungulate on the two-way road in Hayden Valley.

The bison — which can weigh up to 2,000 pounds and stand 6 feet tall — is having none of it and promptly charges at the man, video posted to YouTube by KRTV News shows.

“Oh God, I can’t watch,” a person can be heard saying in the video as the bison charges the man for a second time.

Another person can be heard imploring the man to “Get out of there!”

The man and the bison go their separate ways before the clip ends.

In a warning message on the National Park Service’s official website for Yellowstone National Park, it says, “Wild animals are unpredictable and dangerous.”

“Every year people are injured when they approach animals too closely. Animals that attack people may need to be relocated or killed,” the website says.

The National Park Service advises that visitors “always remain” at least 100 yards from bears or wolves, and at least 25 yards away from all other wildlife.

Also in the news today was that a 10-year-old boy got mauled by a bear on a hiking trail near Old Faithful. The bear showed itself and the boy ran. You never want to run from a bear or a mountain lion.

I for one would like to see a stiff fine for this guy as well as a lifetime ban to entrance into any US National Park.

I think you got your wish. In today's news, ( August 23, 2018 ) this news story surfaced:

Judge Mark Carman sentenced Reinke to 60 days in jail on the charge of harassing wildlife for the bison incident, plus 60 days for interfering with law enforcement and 10 days for disorderly conduct, for 130 days total in jail, with credit for 21 days served.

Reinke has also publicly described himself as an alcoholic.

In court Thursday, Reinke apologized to the bison, saying - "I'm sorry to the buffalo. He didn't deserve what I did to him. I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to hurt that buffalo."

Judge Carman said, "You chased and hounded the bison. You're lucky the bison didn't take care of it, and you're standing in front of me."

Reinke has a criminal history dating to 1991, although no felony offenses.

A federal prosecutor and Carman described Reinke's behavior as the most "egregious" case of animal harassment they'd seen in Yellowstone.

Judge Carman also emphasized that the viral video of Reinke's actions did not affect the sentencing decisions.

Reinke will also be required to serve five years of unsupervised probation, in which he cannot use drugs or alcohol. He's required to go through drug and alcohol treatment. He is also banned from numerous national parks, including Yellowstone....

..sorry a little off-track from Yellowstone but here's another Darwin Award - cheetahs chasing a family in a wildlife park.

This isn't just a Yellowstone thing. If you Google you can find tons of crazy incidents.

OP here... perhaps I should have title the thread a little more specific to the topic... I musta' seen perhaps 4 knock-off threads of the same matter. Oh well.

I am amazed at some of the idiots who choose to engage wildlife.
Where I live we see our fair share of tourons (tourist-morons)... Some are pretty brazen towards a mama noose and her calfs.

We just saw a news report about this nut. Besides the Yellowstone incident this guy was ticketed in Teton N.P last week for drunken disorderly and last night was arrested in Glacier for harassing wildlife. This guy needs help and be removed from the gene pool. Couldn't make up a story like this!!!!

A month ago, in Madison CG, we witnessed a somewhat similar event. Early in the morning, a large bull Bison wandered into Madison. It stood for a pretty good while looking at an older man in a red jacket. The old man was maybe 10-15 yards from him. Finally, it lay down. At this time the man's stupid meter jumped into overdrive. The idiot picked some long grass and walked up to the Bison, waving it in front of him.

Finally the man left. The man finally grew tired and left. That idiot was one false move from seeing the "Pearly Gates" long before he expected.

Sure we can. Sounds like the Bison almost fixed one part of it...

If the Bison had done what it should done, would that be fixing stupid?
Or would it just be lowering the recidivism rate? :B

I witnessed a similar event at Yellowstone this year. A family was in a van about 30 foot from a bison along the road taking pictures. I seen the bison put the stare on them, then the dirt flew about 30 ft behind him and he took off toward the van. It hit the van in the sliding door knocking it completely off the hinges and into the van. The passenger wheels were off the ground to the point of tipping the van completely over. I seen smoke come out of the exhaust on its way back down when the man started the van and took off. I stopped behind him about a half a mile up the road to see if everyone was OK and they were. I promise you there was no need for a bathroom stop for a long while. Couldn't believe how strong the bison was.

That might have been just an Alaskan resident going "Chuck Norris" by taking his pet grizzly out for a run...LOL :B
