Tip If Your Ice Maker Quits

Our ice maker quit a few days into our trip. Until we can deal with that one way or another we needed ice but the 10-lb bags that are readily available everywhere were too big for our residential freezer. so i began searching for smaller bags and finally learned that Chick-Fil-A sells small bags of ice pellets for ~$1.50. the bag of pellets weigh about 6-lbs and completely fill our ice cube tray in our fridge. FYI.

I have a portable ice maker, just add water when needed, it makes about 21 lbs a day, and I usually give some to other campers too. We use it in the house when we have company too.

I would never use ice that came through my rv freezer. I wont drink water that goes thru my Rv lines. I don't trust the sanitizing of those lines. I take bottled water and either make ice in trays or use my portable ice maker. Call me finicky, but that's just me.

In my area ice is sold in 5 pound bags. It is only a couple of bucks a bag and you can get it just about anywhere. A 5 pound bag of ice lasts me a day or more.

I understand that everyone and everywhere is different and it is not this way in other places though.

Bojangles also sells small bags of ice.

Seven Eleven will let you fill your own cup with free ice at the soda fountain including any size previously purchased Big Gulp cup or previously purchased 52 oz or 100 oz Seven Eleven thermal refill mugs. When getting ice they charge only for the cup if you grab a new cup inside. I usually wave my used cup or mug so the clerk sees it when I enter before getting discounted refills or ice only.

Mine quit at home, so I removed the access cover and spun the gears a little with a screw driver and it came back to life.

I took my Ice Maker out and enjoy the added room. At first I used Ice Cube Trays. They have the disadvantage of you have to fill 'em. but the advantage they work with or without 120vac (Ice maker needs 120vac).

Then a friend who was moving into a new house (She owns not rents) decided to "Downsize" her portable ice maker, they come in 2 sizes and the smaller one fits way better in her smaller kitchen, I got the big one.. IT's beside me.. Making ice as I type. it too needs 120vac but if I'm boondocking.. I still have the trays.
Home was where I park it. but alas the.

The ice maker does not have to come from Norcold either, the one I replaced I could have picked up off the shelf at Lowes or Home Depot. Ordered a Whirlpool Ice Maker for $57.00 from Amazon.

My DH loves the ice maker and wouldn't be without it. When ours bit the dust, he ordered the same unit off Amazon and installed it. This was in our 4-door Norcold. We had enough ice when it died to last us the 2 days the other was being shipped.
