Would you run an odd brand tire on your rig? Recently, while camping, I did a visual inspection of my tires. The passenger side rear (two axles) was beginning to separate. This is my second set of Maxxis and the first problem I've had with them. I found a local dealer who was able to order one and it arrived the very next day. The first dealer I called said it could take three to four days to get the tire in. Either way it was not a major problem because we weren't scheduled to leave for a few days anyway. Here's my question: Let's say you're out on I-40 and you have a tire go bad. You're running Maxxis, or Goodyear's or whatever. The dealer can't get you a new tire for three or four days but he does have in stock another reputable brand. Can you run an odd brand tire if it is the same size, weight rating, ply, etc.? I had never thought about it untill this happened. (Just in case anyone is curious, my tires are four years old this month, and have approx. 4,000 towing miles on them. I'll be replacing the other three soon, but I wanted to wait till I got home and use my regular dealer)

Sure can, as long as it's the same type (radial or bias), size and load range. My problem is I'm a bit OCD and it would always bother me if one tire didn't match the other three; don't know about you.

I'd have to be very sure of the quality before I did so.

I haven't had to mix brands, but I've had good luck with Marathon, Maxxis, and Towmax STR ST tires for thousands of miles, on three trailers, over the last 20 years.

I once ran a combo of not just different brands, but different sizes; one side had 205 75 14 and the other side had 215 75 14 (what the tire store had in stock when I needed them). It didn't affect handling or anything.

On my rig the spare is the same size and brand.I would put the existing spare on the ground and use the odd one as a spare.

My Maxxis cost a few dollars less than Marathons at my local tire store. So I got Maxxis.

And you know that because? Maxxis ST tires have been in use for years. The new Carlisle has only been available for a couple years. Chris

How do you know that there are enough new Carlisle tires in use by RV.net users to provide any reliable data?

Anyone using them near their max rating in hot extended travel on a heavy trailer? Chris

The only thing is that those who continue to recommend Maxxis without mentioning the at least 5 failures that I know of are doing a disservice to the original poster. At this point-the new/IMPROVED (and much hated) Carlisle has fewer failures. So go figure.

You found a honest tire dealer IMO.

My local Les Schawb told me Maxxis were on back order for at least a month. I went with what they had in stock(tow max) because I was throttled for time and thought Les Schawb was on top of things. Then only about week later somebody here mentioned they put on some new maxxis. I e-mailed Maxxis and got reply from their corp that they have not been out of stock for over 16 months in west coast warehouse. So long Les Schawb, never again.

I can tell you so many horror stories from people I personally know it would make you sick about good ol LS!

If you like someone up your backside before you can even got out of your truck then they are for you. If you want quality products look somewhere else!

Here is a good one. Bought this truck that was serviced at LS. See anything wrong with the pic?

I've found one big disadvantage of using different brands on one axle is the tread pattern. If a similar tread pattern no big deal but if the tread pattern is too different you may get one tire with superior braking and the other sliding...especially on wet pavement. This action will flat spot a tires tread in a hurry.

On dry roads no big deal. On wet roads just be aware of too much gain on the brake controller and the tire with the poorest traction will usually slide first.
