tire sizing

I have a 78 dodge RV. I got some new rims for it that measure 16x7. I didn't want the 16.5's on there anymore. The tires that were on the 16x7's when I got them at the junkyard were 245/75R16LT's. Is this the ideal tire for this rim? Also could it safely fit a smaller tire such as a 235 or 225? Or would it be better for handling the weight of a vehilce if i just put new 245's back on it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Greg
  • Thanks everyone. I'm guessing an RV service center such as Spader's would have something to lift this thing off of the ground? Any tire places I've talked to say their lift isn't big enough buy the RV is only 19 or 20 ft. long. 23 with the rack. I don't think they know what they're talking about because I'm sure they lift up large vans and SUV's all of the time.
  • Sioux Falls is a city of 160,000! Go find a tire dealer that knows how to put a tire on a motorhome. He will get the right size and load range of tire for you.

  • I'm not so sure about maintaining the original diameter. The original rims had 8.75R16LT tires on them. I called into tires plus and the guy told me with LT245/75R16 I wouldn't have any clearance issues but who knows if he knows what he's talking about. They have nothing to lift an rv so he said I'd have to get the tires on the vehicle myself. Ugh. He said the 235/85R16 would also fit the rims but they would be taller, which worries me that I may get clearance issues...
  • Do you want to maintain the diameter that you had with the 16.5 wheels and tires ? What were you running on the 16.5 wheels ?
  • A 225/75R16E will support the weight safely. A 245/75 may not clear.
