Triple Towing - Friendly reminder

For those who triple-tow just a friendly reminder that it is not legal in all states to triple-tow. Here in NJ, and many states along the east coast it is illegal. We spotted a pick-up towing an RV, towing a utility trailer on 287N this evening, hopefully the person had safe travels.

In Minnesota you can triple tow but only if it is a 5th wheel first then utility or boat etc. You need to stay under a certain total length. Not sure if there is a weight limit or higher class drivers license needed.

In Minnesota the law says the first trailer MUST be a semi type (ie fifth wheel) and the total length must be 70' or less and the TOTAL GVW must be equal to or less than the Mfg's gross vehicle weight rating. No special license is required.
  • We have been double/triple, whatever, towing since 1993 but have never left the borders of the state of Wyoming with our rigs. I believe Wyoming allows double/triple towing as long as the total length does not exceed 75'. As for true triple trailer towing, that is outlawed in Wyoming, the big trucking companies tried to get it through a number of years ago and failed. We never see triple trailers in Wyoming, even on Interstate Highways.
  • The TV is not considered a trailer. So 2 trailers is double towing. 3 trailers is tripple towing.
Either way, thanks for the advice.

  • I didn't know any state allowed towing three trailers by a non professional driver :H
  • Triple tow/double tow (frequently discussed as to what it should be called) is a popular topic often discussed here. Hint: do a google search for triple tow RV.
There are several web sites that list each state's laws, but a good idea to check with each state agency just to make sure the lists are correct.
  • Wouldn't that be double towing?
Triple would involve 3 trailers behind the TV.

Regardless, yes, it is best to check the states laws that you plan to pass through.
