Tucson area in the Spring

Thinking of spending about a month in the general area of Tucson in the Spring. Anyone know when their monsoon season is? When the snowbirds generally are heading home, and recommendations on county, state or private campground or parks. Looking for electricity and water at minimum. FHU would be great. Love all types of outdoor activities as well as museums and historical sites in the area. Will be traveling with our mountain bikes. Thanks very much.

Justins is FHU with miles and miles of adjacent hiking/biking trails.

    Can't go wrong.

Monsoon season is in the summer.
  • The Monsoon officially ends this Friday but we are currently getting storms throughout the area. Spring, which can come as early as mid February or as late as April, every years seems to be different, is a gorgeous time of year.

The biggest problem with spring in the high Sonoran desert is the wind and the pollen levels, both of which frequently are off the chart. There are a number of nice state parks available; Catalina, Patagonia or Roper Lakes, Karchner Cavern to name just a few. Some offer W&E and a few have FHU's. There are lots of RV parks to choose from as well.

    :C

PS: March through April reservations are a good idea. I agree that the snowbirds begin their north/eastward migration in late March with the bulk of the flock departing by the end of April. This will seriously thin out the RV and State Parks. By Mid May it is getting hot and the snowbirds are long gone.

for a FHU/cable/wifi but no other frills try Benson I-10 RV Park in Benson. quiet, clean.
  • Monsoons begin in July through September - usually.

Snowbirds head for home the end of March to do their taxes. :)

Best months in spring are February through April. May and June are very hot.

Can you fit in Tucson and the greater Phoenix areas:

For the greater Phoenix area we'd highly recommend Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Junction. You have a big choice of sites for dry camping to electric to full hookups. It's a awesome park for spring flowers beginning in February for the hillsides of poppies. It has very nice hiking and ranger programs and there's lots to do in the area. We've volunteered there. :) You could bike down the Apache Trail nearby for a beautiful experience with lakes and terrific scenery.

Other very nice campgrounds are through the Maricopa County Parks. They are scattered around the greater Phoenix area. They have lush, big sites and great hiking. They will have electric. Favorites of ours are Usery, McDowell Mountain and Cave Creek.

For the Tucson area Catalina State Park is terrific and has electric. Another nice county campground is in Tucson Mountain Park - Gilbert Ray campground.

If you want a lot of activities the Voyageur RV Park in Tucson is the best.

For mountain biking any of these parks would be good. McDowell Mountain - a Maricopa County park campground would probably be the best for the many trails within the park. It's in Fountain Hills. For Tucson, Gilbert Ray has good trails but Tucson as a whole offers many biking routes if you pick up a map.

As you can tell, these are all favorite areas of ours. Enjoy!

Snowbirds head home starting early MArch

    Not this snowbird.

We leave Eloy, AZ every year early to mid April.
  • I haven't seen anyone recommend the fairgrounds, Pima County Fairgrounds is at the southern end of Tucson, offers full hookup sites for reasonable price. We stay at Voyager RV resort in the winter and it really empties out the end of March. Lots of biking areas in the south part of town.
  • We winter at Rincon Country West RV Resort in SW Tucson. There are full hook ups, lots of activities and miles of paved bike paths accessible from the park's back gate.

    We leave around May 1st.

    Happy trails,
  • I'm in Tucson right now, and today we had some rain, although it's getting near the end of monsoon season, which is generally considered July through Septt. I think you'd be pretty safe coming here in the spring.
  • Thanks to all for responding to my inquiry. Now I really need to get busy making reservations. Springtime in the Arizona desert here we come. Carol
