Using camper transport service?

Hello all. I'll try to make the long story short. Next month I'll be moving from Kansas to Minnesota and trying to figure out the logistics. Among these is how and when to get our camper to the new location. Pulling it when we make the actual move is likely not do-able since I might be using my TV to pull some stuff in a U-Haul trailer. Leaving the camper at the storage lot and retrieving it later also doesn't seem ideal as I'm not likely to have a chunk of days off anytime soon.

DW suggested using an RV transport service and added I should post to this forum to see what others think or share their experiences. Any companies people recommend? Any I should stay away from?

Thanks in advance!

I think doing a little research, which your inquiry here is, makes a lot of sense. The companies that haul for the manufacturers is one source, and U-ship is another. Call and talk about insurance, costs, time frames, personal belongings inside the RV, and any concerns you have.

After watching "Shipping Wars" series on TV, not sure I would have much faith in the "U-ship" method.. Not sure if some of that drama is staged for TV ratings but it does leave one to wonder..

I would second the idea of loading as much as you can in your trailer, unless of coarse it is like your favorite sofa, dinning room table for 10 or any other large bulky stuff that won't fit in a RV door.

For those items I would check with most any of the well known national moving Companies and have them pack and ship the items you were planning for the U-Haul trailer.. Expensive, yeah, but not quite the Amateur night slapstick of Shipping wars..

Just how big a U-Haul trailer?

Can you pack what you were going to put in the U-Haul into the camper instead and then kill 2 birds with one stone, or TV in this case?
  • Make sure they are licensed and insured and do a walk around filming the trailer when they pick it up, so you can document any issues.
  • I agree with the idea of checking with an RV transport company. When I bought my gooseneck from Salem Wisconcon, I had a transport company back haul the gooseneck to Elkhart Indiana for me. The cost was $250. I couldn’t drive from my location out there and back for that. I just ran to Elkhart when the trailer was delivered to the transport company yard and got it.
  • I would try to contact a driver that delivers TTs from Elkhorn, Indiana to dealers in Kansas. It is only 400 miles extra for them to drive from central Kansas to Minneapolis to Elkhorn. Those drivers usually drive back empty so it may be something that they would consider.
  • Get a U-haul truck not trailer and let your wife drive. Get a car trailer from U-haul too, if you need to move your car.
  • RV dealers have drivers who transport for them. Give then a call.
