VA Diesel Fuel Refund

It is not very well publicized that diesel fuel purchased in Virginia for use in a qualifying vehicle may be eligible for 9.1 cent/gallon refund. The website says "Qualifying vehicles include diesel passenger cars, pickup or panel trucks, and trucks with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less."

Details at Virginia DMV

It does not show how to get the refund, however.

Maybe someone should tell the Virginia DMV since the following is what is posted at the link given above.
    Virginia DMV wrote:
The refund is determined by the gallons purchased multiplied by the difference between the rate of tax on diesel fuel (20.2 cents per gallon) and the tax rate on gasoline (11.1 cents per gallon). Tax rates in Virginia fluctuate every six months, which will create different results. For example, if a business or individual purchases 15 gallons of diesel for use in a qualifying vehicle between July 1, and December 31, 2013 and the diesel fuel tax on the purchase is $3.03 then the refund amount would be $1.37 (15 multiplied by 9.1 cents).

    :h
  • It's a percentage huh?
That's weird. I got a notice from my fuel supplier (Quarles). They list the old rate for diesel as $.175 per gal and the new rate as $.202 per gal.
They list the old rate for gas as $.175 per gal and the new rate as $.111 per gal.
Is Quarles wrong? That's certainly not listed as a percentage.
  • Already did all my long distance driving for the year, hopefully will apply next year and will see then. Aint worth the $6.00 return the rest of this year.
  • Darn, as a veteran I thought something new was coming. Chris
  • Um, small detail here, but the refund is not calculated at 9.1 cents per gallon, it is calculated as 2.8% of purchase price. Starting in June, Virginia stopped assessing fuel taxes on a cents per gallon basis, and switched to a percentage tax rate. This was done to save the pols from having to vote to increase tax rates in the future as fuel costs rise. The rate is 3.2% for gasoline and 6% for diesel, but light trucks and cars get a refund of the difference between the two rates, which is 2.8%.

Le'see, that's 9.1 cents per gallon PROVIDED YOU PAID $3.25 per gallon for the diesel fuel. I just sprang for a tankful at $3.62 a gallon, so I'll get back 10.1 cents per gallon.
  • There is at the bottom of the page --
