Venting About Local Bookings......

Our county runs the majority of campgrounds here on Long Island. Many Long Islander's pack these campgrounds for the simple fact that it's quite the PITA to get off Long Island in a car, let alone a camper.

Now, I've only been a camper for a few years now but the county has always had a 6 month out reservation system window. Naturally, you have to be at your computer exactly 6 months in advance to get the best sites. We always booked 6 months in advance to get the good sites.

For whatever reason, the county decided to change the system so you could only book 4 months in advance. They were going to open the 2014 camping bookings on December 20. That date comes and they hit us with en email saying there were unforseen problems and that the vendor is looking at the problem with no timetable for a fix. We get an email a few days later saying everything is fixed and that they'll be opening up 2014 bookings on January 15. No big deal since it's still the slow season for the most part since you'd only be booking till just shy of Memorial Day.

January 15 comes and goes and nobody is able to book anything! Everyone gets error messages when trying to book. There are a few different error messages depending on what page you were on. That night we get an email stating there were unforseen problems, blah blah blah.... A day or two later we get informed that the problem is fixed and 2014 bookings will open up January 28, tonight.

Guess what. MORE PROBLEMS!! Still can't book a thing!

It really is getting absurd at this point.

There are many issues with web site booking.. First.. Ever hear of Slash Dot? There used to be a company or web page by that name.. They would list a web site and almost immed MILLIONS (it seemed) tried to access.. this, of course, crashed the server cause it's not designed for that kind of load... This is a good portion of what happened with the Healthcare.gov site.. Too many people trying to connect at one time. And it's the same thing crashing your site (By the way, WHICH long island?)

Second. There is another web site I visit,, I won't say which even though they are NOT competitors with this one. Now they went Beta for about a year before they went live,, Since I had "Beta" access I was on it during this period. Many bugs were squashed,,, Finally they figured they had it fixed and went live.

Well, took just a few minutes to find what Murphy tells us about computer programs: There is ALWAYS another bug, and quashing it will cause 3 more to pop up.

yea can't ya call the park directly and book your site over the phone?
I would. that way you get your site. I wouldn't wait. I would go directly to the source and book now for your date.

Well the good new is other people are having the same issues. Can you just call them and reserve the date and spot? That seems to be your ultimate goal.

Can you call and make reservations directly? If someone has no computer, how do they make reservations?
