Water Pump Piping restrictions

I am considering putting in flexible metal piping that is used in domestic sinks to try to prevent the shock/hammer from the Shurflo water pump.

But the interior size of the piping seems to be about 3/16 of an inch or less? I can buy an adapter that changes the fitting from 3/8 I think wall valve to 1/2 inch NPT, but will my flow rate really be affected?

Even if I go to the Revolution Shurflo pump, I still think the flexible lines will help.. what do you say?

thanks, Mike
  • This from ShurFlo should solve the problem. It is smaller than the above pictured accumulator tank, but it will do the job.

As for winterization, since it uses a bladder, when the pipes are empty of water, the tank is, so it can be either dry or wet winterized.

For me, this is a must have, especially with most water pumps being the single speed type that will pulsate in the middle of the night. This stops that issue cold.
  • Or add an accumulator tank. It gives the same benefit as the water hammer arrestor, with the added advantage of stopping water pulsation at sink and shower, and allowing you to flush the toilet all night without the pump coming on to wake DW/DH.

Even with the accumulator tank, you will find advantages in cushioning the pump's mounting and flexible hoses connected to the pump.

  • I did try the Shurflo "Pump Silencing Hoses" already. They were so inflexible it was impossible to work with them and I returned them to the store.

Our present fresh water hose is quite inflexible too, but one we had before that was very flexible.

I thank you for your posts and video.
  • Flexible plastic or rubber hose will work better. The metal flex pipe you propose is still quit stiff.
  • The restriction will cut flow and put extra load on the pump.

The water pump silence kit would work much better. It consists of two flexible plastic hoses.

Most if not all the hammering is caused by pump vibration radiating into the pump output hose but there's a simple solution that's far more effective than what you're proposing - dramatically extend the length of that hose with soft potable water hose. Sure, isolating the pump itself by mounting it atop foam, wrapping whatever water lines you can get to with foam pipe wrap, and tying down any lines that may want to contact an adjacent wall panel or the floor are all steps that will help minimize the racket but extending the length of the output hose is in my experience the most effective way to silence that water pump. Here's a series of 3 pics and a video which illustrate just how effective this has been in my own trailer.
