Water pump wont shut off

It ended up being the water pump. Replaced and it worked as it should. I think it was a bad pressure switch so I am going to order one for a spare. I pulled it apart and it was hard to push in or a lot harder than I thought it should be. Thanks for the help, Jim

Have you bled all supply lines of air, including the toilet? Trapped air in a pipe will cause the pump to run, trying to pressurize the air.

Make sure city fill valve is closed also any out side shower or faucets. This may also cause pump to run continually.

Pump is pumping water, pressurizes system.....but won't shut off when there is no demand.

Pump would be bad if it couldn't pump water and pressurize system.

A new pump will fix it (cause new pump comes with new pressure switch) but don't think your current pump is bad.....just faulty pressure switch

Ill let you know if the pump was bad. We are going to try one in the next day or two. Every thing held pressure so I don't think the city waterline is letting air in but not sure. We plugged it with a brass fitting rather than the rubber cover. Thanks for the ideas! Jim

I agree it's time for a new one then - as long as your positive the water isn't going anyplace.

Have you check the city water connection......is it dripping?
They have a check valve that can leak so pump would cycle.

If pump is running continuously then it is either not building up enough pressure to trigger pressure switch, pressure switch is sticking or pump discharge pressure may need to be adjusted.

On the end of pump head is an adjustment screw.
Turn it clockwise 1/2 turn at a time (1 1/2 turns MAX) to increase discharge pressure. Pump should build up pressure/shut-off (with no demand) within a couple of seconds (after lines have been purged of air cold/hot sides)

With a faucet wide open pump should run then shut off within seconds after closing faucet.

IF no leaks (low point drains, showers--inside/outside, city water connection, fittings etc.) pump should only run under demand.

IF adjustment doesn't work and no leaks....pump pressure switch or pump bad.

Itook the pump apart and cleaned it-wasn't bad-and tried it again. Also pulled the cold water line to the sink and let the water go thru that without it connected and now we have good pressure to the cold so there must have been something in the line. Pump still wont shut off. I let it pump up pressure and left it 10 minutes without turning anything on and checked it and still had pressure so doesn't appear to be any leaks in the lines. Think we should just try a new pump? Thanks, Jim
