WD hitch size

I've found a used 2005 Trail Cruiser C21BH that we really like. My TV is a 2012 Nissan Frontier 4.0L V6. 630# tongue weigth and 6300# towing capacity ratings. Payload, etc. all appear that my truck should be able to handle this TT. The TT's tongue weight is 385# and the dry weight is 2933# (with options, I'd guess around 3300#). Overall length is 22 feet.

I've been looking at WD hitches. Most I find are 1000# rated bars. Oddly enough, lower capacity bars setups are more expensive?! What's the downside to getting a 1000# WD hitch with only 400# or so of tongue weight? What size SHOULD I get if 1000# is not the acceptable?

Thanks for your help!
  • Yup, it was very likely that his receiver was only rated for 500lbs of tongue weight without a WD hitch.

obviously, another owner who never read his owners manual which would have told him that he was over the minimum amount that GMC recommends using a WDH.:S
  • The bars support a range. For example with Reese trunnion:

    1,200 bars: 600 lbs - 1,200 lbs
    800 bars: 400 lbs - 800 lbs

If you envision ever going bigger then get 1200 lb system. At 750 you're almost in the middle of the 1200 lb bar range.

if it was me, I'd be going for the 1200 lb bars.
  • We've have not bought the trailer yet, so I can't weigh it. The current owner says he it pulled with a V6 GMC Envoy and did not use a WD hitch. I don't think I want to tow with the hitch. The GVWR of the TT is 5000#, 15% would be 750#. So ya'll think 750# bars is what I should go with?
  • I've always found it best to set up by the numbers. Rated spring bars equal to 15% of the trailers GVWR (that's the heaviest the tongue will ever be). Get bars as close to that weight as possible without being UNDER it.

    Good luck / Skip
